The Twins' 14 straight defeats set a team record and is the longest in the majors this season. Minnesota has lost 19 of its last 20 and 28 of its last 31. CLEVELAND'S winning streak mat- ched a 10-game string in 1979. The club record is 13, set in 1942 and equaled in 1951. Indians starter Rick Sutcliffe, 4-1, surrendered seven hits while striking out five and walking one until yielding to Ed Glynn to start the ninth. Glynn faced just one batter before Ed Whitson came on to record his second save by striking out the side. the Indians jumped on Bobby Castillo, 2-3, for three runs in the first. Miguel Dilone walked leading off, stole second and continued to third on cat- cher Tim Laudner's throwing error. Padres 3, Cubs 1 CHICAGO (AP) - San Diego's Juan Eichelberger fired a brilliant one-hitter yesterday and the Padres scored all their runs on a dropped fly ball to notch a 3-1 victory over the ChicagoCubs. Eichelberger, 5-6, yielded his only hit on a questionable call in the second in- ning when Scott Thompson hit a groun- der to second. Tim Flannery slowed the ball down, but it bounded off his glove into right field and official scorer Dave Nightingale of The Sporting News credited Thompson with a hit. Eichelberger struck out three and walked two.' The Cubs self-destructed in the sixth inning en route to their fourth straight loss. Dickie Noles, 5-6, issued con- secutive walks to Gary Templeton and Ruppert Jones, and Sixto Lezcano singled to load the bases. All three runners were running with two out when Joe Lefebrve lofted a fly ball to left-center field. Harvey Kuenn, the Brewers' batting instructor since 1971, was named interim manager and took charge of the team for its game against the Mariners in Seattle last night. RODGERS, 43, was said to have checked out of the team's quarters at the Park Hilton in Seattle and was unavailable for comment. A change had heen rumored for several days as the Brewers, after a 16-10 start this season, slumped to 23-24. Picked by many experts to win the American League's East Division championship this season, they were in sixth place, seven games out of first place, before last night's game. "The main reason for the change is that the club has not played up to what we think its potential is," General Manager Harry Dalton said in a statement issued by the club here. "WE HAVE A club which we legitimately believe is strong enough to be a con- tender, and we have not playedin that fashion for the last three weeks or so." Dalton said Kuenn, 51, would be "a full manager in every sense. "The 'interim' simply means that at some point we will have someone else come in to handle this ball club," he said. "However, the duration of the interim period is open-ended. It could well go through the end of the 1982 season." 4 iodgers . .. replaced by Kuenn 4
