Owners
may halt
season
NEW YORK (AP) - National Foot-
ball League owners said yesterday they
will not lock players out of training
camp or preseason games - but they
also may not start the regular season if
the contract dispute isn't settled by
September.
The owners met at a midtown hotel,
their first meeting since 27 of them lost
their court battle to Oakland Raiders
boss Al Davis, who is attempting to
move his franchise to Los Angeles.
AFTER THE meeting, Jack Donlan,
executive director 'of the NFL
Management Council, the owners'
bargaining agent in the contract talks
with the players' union, told a brief news
conference:
"There will be no lockout at the July
15 expiratjon of the contract or at the
opening of training camp. As far as I'm
concerned, the preseason and training
camp are safe.
"But the owners might want to re-
examine the situation in September,"
Donlan added. "I have the feeling the
owners don't want to do what the
baseball owners did - finance a strike."
Baseball's union struck one-third of
the way into the 1981 season. The NFL
owners are concerned, Donlan said,
that the football players might "play
four or five games, get enough money,
then strike. The owners reserve the
right to re-examine their position in
September." The season is scheduled to
