The match was the first of a five-game, three-city tour of South Carolina in which the Wolverines will face five southern universities. Michigan (10-6) could win only one set against the Gamecocks. Robbie Risdon won the opening set of her fifth singles match against South Carolina's Amy Kneale, but eventually succum- bed, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0. In the top singles mat- ch, Michigan's Mary Mactaggart, playing for the injured Marian Kremer, was defeated by .aura Bernstein, 6-0, 6- 2. Michigan won its opening match, 5-4, over Minnesota, but fell in the semi- finals the following day, 7-2, to North- western. The Wolverines then upended Michigan State, 5-4, to capture third place. Several Michigan players earned honors at the conference tournament. Mactaggart and Kremer were chosen for the first team All-Conference singles squad, while the doubles team of Kremer and Jane Silfen made the first team All-Conference doubles squad. Kremer did not play in the Big Ten Tournament because of her injured leg. In a vote by the players, Michigan's Mactaggart was also honored as the Big Ten Sportswoman of the Year for Women's Tennis. Weaver, Larsen qualify AIAW-qualifying performances by Melanie Weaver and Lisa Larsen at the Central Michigan invitational on April 17 highlighted the past three weeks' ac- tion for the Michigan women's track team. Weaver, a junior from Scottville, broke the tape in 3:49.2 to win the 10,000-meter run and qualify for the nationals, while Larsen, a Battle Creek junior, won the 5000-meter and qualified with a clocking of 16:45.9. OTHER Wolverine victors in Mount Pleasant included Penny Neer in both the shot put and discus, Joanna Bullard in the high jump, Melody Middleton in the heptathlon and Sue Frederick in the 800-meter run. Michigan won the 11- team meet by totaling 140 points, 14 more than host Central.
