Page 10-B- Thursday, June 3, 1982-The Michigan Daily Ann Arbor's parks offer the great escape who enjoy summer water fun. Canoes and paddleboats can be rented by the hour and the park has its own fishing area. Bicycles, both single seat and tandem, are also available for hourly rental. In addition, Gallup's walkable nature area is accessible to the han- dicapped. Island Park, located adjacent to Fuller Park, is, as its name suggests, an island, complete with picnic shelters, tables and barbeque grills. There is also a field game area and wahls and trails accessible to the han- dicapped. Veterans Park, located at 2150 Jackson Road, has an outdoor pool and a number of lighted tennis courts and softball and baseball fields. Veterans, however, also offers an unusual alter- native to summer fun, an indoor ice- See ANN ARBOR, Page 11 By FANNIE WEINSTEIN Daily Staff Writer The summer is usually the time when students get their first taste of the nine- to-five (if not longer) work day. Admit- tedly, Ann Arbor is not a booming metropolis but even in the summer, its got its own grind and the hustle and bustle can get to even the most tolerant of city dwellers. Well, for those who just can't deal with the city's heat, even Ann Arbor's, all is not lost, for within walking distan- ce of almost every part of the city, a cool pool is waiting to be dived into, a barbeque is waiting to be grilled on and a canoe is waiting to be paddled. In the general Ann Arbbor vicinity, there are more than lob park and recreation areas, spread out over almost 2,000 acres. They offer everything from baseball and softball fields to canoe and paddleboat rentals to picnic shelters and nature walks. A NUMBER of the parks can be reached by Ann Arbor Transportation Authority (AATA) buses and many have facilities accessible to the han- dicapped. Perhaps one of the best features of the parks is that almost all of the facilities (except the pools) can be used free of-charge and the fee for most ren- tal equipment is relatively inexpensive. The following is a summary of some of the more popular recreation areas. The list is by no means complete, but may provide some insight for those looking to break loose and get away from it all (even for just an afternoon). ARGO PARK and Canoe Livery, located at 1055 Longshore Drive, is a modest sized park, well-suited for a sift 5o i Bone's i 5pifit SBalloons for you University Flower Shop, Inc. For those who prefer their fun in the water, the park has a fishing and boat launching area, as well as the canoe livery. Canoes, paddleboats, and rowboats may be rented by the hour on both weekdays and weekends. Package trips are also available. Barton Park, located on the northern outskirts of Ann Arbor and surrounded by Barton Pond, is also made for nature lovers seeking a relaxing afternoon getaway. Spread out over more than 100 acres, one can explore the park's ex- tensive nature areas. Buhr Park, located at 2751 Packard, has one of the city's four outdoor pools. The pool is usually open until the early evening and offers adult, general public, and family swim times. Ad- mission fees are based on resident and non-resident status. Daily admission to this and the other city pools is $1.25 for adults and 75 cents for senior citizens and children 17 and under. Season passes are also available. THE PARK also features facilities for a number of other outdoor activities including a volleyball court, six tennis courts, four of which are lighted for evening play, two baseball fields, two softball diamonds and a field games area. In addition, Briarwood Bus Loop No. 2 goes right by the park. Burns Park, located just off Stadium Boulevard and Packard, is a small recreational park but its size in no way reflects its facilities. The park is well equipped with a paved game court, two basketball courts, five tennis courts, a softball and baseball field, and a field games area. For those who'd rather exercise by eating, picnic tables and grilling facilities are available. Fuller Park, located off Glen Avenue near the University Hospital, has the largest outdoor pool in the area, com- plete with three diving boards and a spacious sundeck. The park is also the home of a competitive swimming and diving program. The 65 acre park features four lighted tennis courts, a field games area, and 10 soccer fields. The park also has nature walks and trails accessible to the handicapped and can be reached by Huron Bus Route No. 5. GALLUP PARK, surrounded by Geddes Pond, provides much room in which one may roam. It's a choice spot for a family outing but is sometimes crowded, especially on weekends, and parking is limited. Like Argo park, there are facilities available for those - - ~* * * m a 5 i a 5 a a E4 ALLMENDKNGR 8.5 a2a a2a CCa a J a a Z Z ao a .J W EU ULIMENDIOEROBwSDw*0 *a *m***** a OR ARBWRETUM 35.00 - * *** 05 BaNE a31.O S U A' dpa___ O*d* G4 BRTOEN H8 BAXTE H4 -BIRD HL' J6 BLACK PaOND GS BROADAYR C7 BROWN -G6 CEDAR BEND -- CHURCHILLDONS G7 COBBLESTONE FARM BD4 B GCRANDRS ES CULTURAL ARTS BUILDING --GOEARHART G8 EARHART WEST 706 ESCH FAIRVEW CEMETERY H8 FOLKSTONE 1 10 FOREST F5 FORSYTHE GB FR SINN F3 FRITZ G6 MITCHELAWTLD F8 GALLUP GHAGARDEN GHOMES 8 GAER HaGLAZAS GS GLEN H8 G ENBR I R G4 HANNAH FS HANOVER SOUARE H2 HOLLYWOOD G4 HUNT JS HRN BRIDGE JK HURON HIGHLANDS SOUTH C7 HURON HILLS GOLF COURSE H4 KUEBLER LANGFORD GB -- -WDEEB E3 LAS VEGAS H5 LESLIE HOMESTEAD J6 LESLIE PARK_ J6 LESLIE PARK GLFCOURSE He LESLIE WOODS FS LIBERTY PLAZA HS LONGSHORE E4 MACKPOOL J10 MARSHA L eG MARYFIELD &WIDCOO G3 _LL.ER G4 - MIXTWOOD POMONA E3 MUSHROOM J7 NORTH AMPUS HEIGHTS G4 NORTH MAIN H5 - NORTHSIDE C8 PEAGRiL GS PLYOUH PRKWAY G5 RIVERSIDE C7 ROSE ES ROSE & WHITE F7 RUTHVEN C8 SCARLETT MITCHELL ADD.
