Johnson qualifies for NCAA meet

By RON POLLACK
The Michigan men's tracksters who
had already qualified for the NCAA
championships competed in the TFA-
USA meet held in Wichita, Kansas, but
it was in South Bend, Indiana that the
top Wolverine performance took place.
While the NCAA qualifiers were in
Wichita, the rest of the team was par-
ticipating at the Central Collegiate
Track and Field Championships in
South Bend. And it was there that
Michigan's Shelby Johnson qualified
for the NCAA's which will be held
tomorrow through Saturday. Johnson
qualified in the 400-meter intermediate
hurdles with a time of 50.7. The NCAA
qualifying time is 51.21..
PRIOR TO THE meet, head coach
Jack Harvey had said that the team's
objectives over the weekend was to
have Johnson and shot putter Scott
Eriksson qualify for the NCAA's. Har-
vey only got half of his wish, as

' GOLFER ENDS 'M' CAREER:
Humenik misses cut at NCAA's

By BUDDY MOOREHOUSE
No one said it was going to be easy for Ed Humenik
in the NCAA Golf Championship-and it wasn't.
Competing against 194 other golfers, the senior
Michigan linkster failed to make the cut aftersthree
rounds of the tournament, which was held in
Pinehurst, N.C. last weekend. Humenik had rounds of
75, 80, and 79 for an 18-over-par total of 234.
THE INDIVIDUAL champion in the tourney was
Bill Ray Brown of Houston, who shot an eight-under-
par 210 for the four rounds. The Cougars ran away
with th team title as well, as John Slaughter and
Mark Fuller of Houston finished in a tie for third to go
along with Brown's first-place finish.

Humenik started off on the right foot, shooting a
respectable three-over-par 75 for the first round. He
had two birdies and five bogeys for the round, but his
problems came with his putting.
"Ed hit the ball well off the tee, but ran into some
problems in trying to salvage some holes for par,"
Michigan assistant coach Jim Carras said. "He ex-
perienced same mediocre putting. On five occasions,
Ed was less than two feet off of the green and still
couldn't make 'ar."
HUMENIK STARTED off the second round with an
even-par 36 on the front nine, but experienced some
problems on the back nine as he shot a 44. He had a

double bogey on the 13th hole and followed with a
quadruple bogey on the 14th.
"Ed played a good round of golf outside of those two
bad holes," Carras said. "If Ed didn't have those two
holes which threw him off of his game, then I would
say he probably would have shot an even round."
Humenik's seven-over round of 79 on the third day
of the tournament left him shy of the cutoff point, and.
marked the end of the collegiatyecareer of the Allen
Park native. It also capped a highly successful year
for Humenik, one of the bright spots for the Michigan
men's golf team in 1982. His best tournament of the
year was the Badger Invitational, where he shot a 65
on the last day to take the individual title.

Piston guard Long
becomes free agent
PONTIAC (AP) - High-scoring offer that I thought was reasonable. But
Detroit Pistons guard John Long, when I got back to my office, that had
unable to come to contract terms with changed. They restructured the
the National Basketball Association package so that there was less money
team, became a free agent yesterday. for John."
Jack McCloskey, general manager of
the club, told a news conference at the
Pontiac Silverdome that negotiations
between the Pistons and Long's agent,
Irwin Weiner of Tuckahoe, N.Y., had
broken down.
"WE MADE A substantial offer
which we thought was unfair to John
and the club," McCloskey said. "They
rejected that and came back with a
counter offer. But John then decided to
try the free-agent market."
Long was the Pistons' leading scorer
last season, averaging 21.9 points per
game in69 games played.
McCloskey said that if Long finds no
takers on the free agent market that the
Pistons will begin negotiations again
from scratch.
Weiner, contacted late yesterday af-
ternoon, said the Pistons "made one ; .. rejects Pistons' offer
