The losing streak matches the previous high of 13 straight for the Min- nesota franchise - set in 1961, the year the club moved from Washington - and is the longest in the majors this season. The Twins have lost 18 of their last 19 contests and27 of 30. WITH TWO out in the Cleveland eighth, Von Hayes singled off Davis, 1- 6. After Hayes stole second, Ron Hassey was intentionally walked and Jack Perconte also walked to load the bases. Blue Jays 5, Yankees 2 TORONTO (AP) - Barry Bonnell drove in the tying and lead runs with a bases-loaded single off New York relief ace Rich Gossage in the eighth inning and Jesse Barfield added a two-run double as the Toronto Blue Jays rallied to defeat the Yankees 5-2 last night for their fourth consecutive triumph. Gossage, the third Yankee pitcher, came on with one out in the eighth in- ning and runners at first and second. He walked pinch hitter Buck Martinez on four pitches and Bonnell rapped his next pitch into center field for the game-winning hit. Barfield's double made it 5-2. Dale Murray, 3-2, who relieved Jerry Garvin in the seventh inning, was the. winner with three innings of 'one-hit relief. Shane Rawley, 3-2, was the loser. Rawley walked pinch hitter Garth Lorg to start the Toronto eighth and then threw late to second on Willie Up- shaw's sacrifice bunt. The runners ad- vanced on a wild pitch and Rawley struck out Dave Revering before giving way to Gossage. Braves 7, Mets 3 NEW YORK (AP)- Dale Murphy's three-run homer keyed a four-run first inning and the Atlanta Braves went on to a 7-3 victory over the New York Mets last night. Murphy took over leadership in the National League home run race with 15. He also is the leader at driving in runs with 42. Randy Jones, 6-4, was the victim of the Braves' assault in the first inning, allowing all four runs without retiring a batter before he was lifted. The game marked Jones' second attempt to notch the 100th victory of his career. Atlanta's Ken Dayley, 2-2, gave up a two-run homer in the fourth to Ellis Valentine and a solo shot to Rusty Staub in the sixth before needing relief help. Steve Bedrosian and Gene Garber pit- ched the last 32-3 innings, finishing up a combined six-hitter. Pirates 3, Dodgers I PITTSBURGH (AP) - John Can- delaria and two relievers combined on a five-hitter and Bill Madlock hita two- run homer to pace the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers last night. After the start of the game was delayed 65 minutes by rain, Madlock rapped his two-run shot in the first in- ning off loser Jerry Reuss, who fell to 5- 5 with his fourth loss infive decisions. LEE LACY singled up the middle with one out in the Pirate first and Madiock drove Reuss' next pitch over the left field wall for his fifth homer. Pittsburgh added a run in the second. Johnny Ray singled, took second on Dale Berra's walk, moved to third on Candelaria's sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch by Reuss. Padres 9, Cubs 1 CHICAGO (AP) - Ruppert Jones slugged a three-run homer and Brad Perkins drove in three runs with a triple and a single yesterday, powering the San Diego Padres to a 9-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs. The Padres, who earned their seven- th victory in 11 games, scored four runs in the second inning and four more in the third as the Cubs suffered -their third straight defeat. John Montefusco, 3-4, was the winner, but he worked only five innings. Eric Show finished to gain his second save. Randy Martz, 4-4, too the loss. JONES OPENED the second inning with a single, stole second and scored on a single by Sixto Lezcano. One out later, Joe Lefebvre was given an inten- tional walk. Perkins then tripled both runners home and scored on Mon- tefusco's squeeze bunt. (AP)- Pat Haden, former starting quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams and a star at the University of Southern California, has announced his retirement from professional football, the Rams announced yesterday. Haden, 29, who joined the Rams in 1976 after a season in the now-defunct World Football League, threw for 52 touchdowns for the Rams of the National Football League. During that time, he battled a series of injuries and survived several challenges to his job from taller, stronger-armed quar- terbacks. A SPOKESMAN for the Rams said that Haden will become a color com- mentator for CBS television. Haden, who also has a law degree, spent parts of two years as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University in England following graduation from Southern Cal. With the acquisition of 6-foot-3 Bert Jones from Baltimore, it was apparent that the 5-11 Haden would not be the starting quarterback for the Rams this year.e . DURING HIS six years with the Rams, the NFL club had a record of 35-18- 1 when he started. He completed 731 passes in 1,363 attempts but was beset by injuries.
