The Michigan Daily-Wednesday, June 2, 982--Page 9 Pope prays for Christian unity in Scotland GLASGOW, Scotland (AP)- From a hillside in Scotland, Pope John Paul II preached a sermon yesterday of peace and reconciliation, asking the Protestants and Roman Catholics of this ancient land to make a "pilgrimage together hand in hand." In the shimmering heat of a Scottish afternoon, more than 250,000 people at Glasgow's Bellahouston Park gave the pontiff the warmest welcome yet on his six-day British visit. They sang, held up signs, waved yellow papal flags and repeatedly interrupted his homily with rhythmic chants of "John Paul, John Paul." THE PONTIFF, who has been preaching and meeting religious leaders for five days, is the first pope to visit Britain, which broke with the Vatican in 1534. In this predominantly Presbyterian land where Protestants and Catholics have died for their faiths under Scottish and British monarchs, John Paul con- cluded his sermon with a plea to "that larger community of believers in Christ who share with my Catholic brothers and sisters the privilege of being Scots, sons and daughters alike of this ancient nation." Outside the rally, about 150 militant Protestant followers of the Rev. Ian Paisley waved bibles and shouted "An- ti-Christ!" as the pope arrived by helicopter. Unlike a demonstration a day earlier in Edinburgh, where Paisley's supporters hurled debris and abuse at the papal motorcade, yester- day's demonstration produced no scuf- fles and no arrests. The pontiff's plea for Christian reconciliation followed a similar message delivered to the head of Scotland's Presbyterian church, the Rt. Rev. John McIntyre, and other Protestant leaders at a morning meeting in Edinburgh, the Scottish capital. "OUR WILL for unity can be a sign of hope to a divided world-not least in these days in which peace is so sorely imperiled," the pope said. The pope has made Christian unity a major theme of his British tour, star- ting with his visit last Saturday to Can- terbury Cathedral, seat of the Church of England. In his Glasgow homily, the pontiff, wearing white vestments and a gold- trimmed mitre, recalled the per- secution of Scottish Roman Catholics during the Reformation. "You are heirs to the sacred heritage," he told the throng in Scotland's most Catholic city. "Be loyal to the memory of those valiant forerun- ners in the faith. Be diligent in handing on intact the spiritual heritage commit- ted to you." Blaze of glory The lights of nearby Windsor pale against the glow of the Dodge fountain in Detroit's Hart Plaza. Scheduled for completion in 1985, the $285 million Replacement Hospital Project presently is the largest con- struction project in the state. Work began last October and has progressed smoothly up to this poirnt, despite some concerns over funding. Both Bremer and James Brinkerhoff, University vice president and chief financial officer, were uncertain how long the strike would last. Bremer said that the University would look at other ways to continue construction of the project, although at present no specific alternatives have been examined. "It is a management problem we will have to look at," she said.
