Rookie of the Year went to first baseman Mena Reyman. The Maize and Blue award, given to the player who shows the hardest work and dedication was won by Tammie San- ders, a senior catcher. The Pitcher of the Year award went to Jan Boyd, a junior. And finally, the team's MVP was Diane Hatch, an outfielder. The Wolverines finished the season with a 31-14 record and were third at the AIAW's. Chargers acquire Siemon SAN DIEGO (AP) - Veteran lineback- er Jeff Siemon has been acquired by the San Diego Chargers from the Min- nesota Vikings in exchange for an un- disclosed future draft choice, a spokesman for the Chargers said yesterday. The 6-foot-2, 235-pound Siemon was a starter in 100 consecutive National Football League games for the Vikings, beginning with the seventh game of his rookie season in 1972. He was the Vikings' No. 1 draft pick out of Stanford that year. Siemon has played in four Pro Bowl games. Browns sign Bahr CLEVELAND (AP) - The Cleveland Browns have signed veteran placekicker Matt Bahr and ninth-round draft choice Milton Baker to a series of one-year contracts each, the National Football League team said yesterday. Bahr, who came to Cleveland in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers last season, was the only Browns veteran to play out his option after the season. He led the team in scoring in 1981 with 61 points. Baker, a tight end from West Texas State, was the second 1982 .draft choice ° to sign with Cleveland. The first was running back Dwight Walker, a fourth- round pick from Nicholls State Univer- sity in Louisiana. Gardner's contract renewed MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - In a show of confidence yesterday, the slumping Minnesota Twins renewed Manager Billy Gardner's contract through the 1983 season. The Twins have lost their last eight games, 13 of their last 14 and 31 in their last 38. GARDNER SAID owner Calvin Grif- fith called him into his office yesterday morning and gave him the news. He said he had not been concerned about being fired. "I've been in the game 38 years," the 54-year-old Gardner said. "I don't worry about those things. I told my wife I'm not going to look over my shoulder. "I never really considered being fired. But it makes me feel good. I'm just happy to still be in the big leagues." GARDNER, A former major league infielder and an original member of the Twins when the team moved to Min- nesota from Washington in 1981, took over as manager May 22, 1981, when Johnny Goryl was fired. Gardner said he hoped his contract renewal would help the team. "For one thing, they the players will know the things I do will carry over un- til next year," he said. "We've got a lot of young kids and I know now I'll be with them the rest of the year." Rookie first baseman Kent Hrbek, one of the most productive members of baseball's youngest team, agreed. "It helps him because maybe he can bear down on us a little more," Hrbek said. "I hope he sticks around as long as I'm horn Ilike nlavina for the man." { Hatch ...team MVP Gardner . . . gets vote of confidence Indian CLEVELAND (AP)- John Denny pitched a five-hitter, and Mike Hargrove and Andre Thornton keyed a five-run third inning that gave the Cleveland Indians their fifth straight victory, a 5-2 triumph over the Chicago White Sox last night. Denny, 3-5, struck out three and walked three as he recorded his fourth complete game. The Cleveland right- hander retired the last 19 Chicago hit- ters after yielding both White Sox runs in the third inning. RON LEFLORE led off the third with a single, stole second, went to third on a sacrifice by Tony Bernazard and scored on Steve Kemp's groundout to second. Greg Luzinski then singled, Tom Paciorek walked and Harold Baines slapped a run-scoring single for a 2-0 Chicago lead. Denny then retired Carlton Fisk on a grounder to end the inning and did not allow another Chicago baserunner. Rick Manning singled off Steve Trout, 4-4, to open the Cleveland third. Bill Nahorodny doubled Manning to third, and after Trout retired the next two batters, Toby Harrah was walked intentionally to load the bases. Hargrove then singled for two runs and Thornton followed with a run- scoring double down the left field line. Chicago left fielder Steve Kemp threw to second trying to nail Thornton, but the throw was wild, allowing both Hargrove and Thornton to score for a 5- 2 Cleveland lead. Cubs 4 , Dodgers 3 CHICAGO (AP)- Keith Moreland's s defeat two-run homer plus a two-run double by Ryne Sandberg powered the Chicago Cubs and Randy Martz to a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers yester- day. Moreland hit his ninth homer of the season in the fourth inning after Bill Buckner singled.
