Whether using ear-splitting discordant guitar screams of decep- tively pristine lullabies, Reed always attempts to shake the complacency of a desensitized 'pop' culture. Reed's career began as lead singer in Andy Warhol's late 60's bandchild, the Velvet Underground, which also featured such progressive talents as John Cale, Sterling Morrison, Maureen Tucker, and, later, Nico. Where others sang puerile praises to glorified baby-strained images of (eventually sexual) love, 'together- hess', innocence (and innocence lost), Velvet U exposed the inconsistencies and hypocrises of both liberals and the status quo, the realities of drugs and alienation, the feelings of inadequacy and insecurity. Continuing into a productive solo career, Reed touched the tender and made them bleed, not really in anger, but in exasperation and disappoin- tment, disengagement and defiance. He took listeners out to the wild side, into the back rooms and bedrooms, onto the neon-lit streets and down the alleys.
