Billie Jean King, the 39-year- old American seeded 10th among the women, was upset by Romania's Lucia Romanov 6-3, 6-4 while Balzas Taroczy of Hungary, the No. 10 seed among the men, was eliminated by Czech Pavel Slozil 3-6, 7-6, 7-5, 6-7, 6-3. Connor's victory on the clay courts of Paris' Roland Garros Stadium moved him into the third round, and Evert Lloyd's 216th clay court victory in the 219 matches she has played on that sur- face since 1973, advanced her into the fourth round. "I'm hitting the ball well, moving well - overall I'm in pretty good shape," the 29-year-old Connors said. CONNORS HAS never won the Fren- ch Open. No American has for 27 years, and Connors' chances have been boosted with the defection of Bjorn Borg and the absence of top-ranked John McEnroe, out with an ankle in- jury. "I can't say I'm exactly sorry they're not here, but the best players playing against the best is what it's all about," Connors said. Following Evert Lloyd in the seedings are Americans Martina Navartilova and Tracy Austin. EARLIER, NO. 2 seed Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia moved into the men's singles third round after a two-day rain and darkness delayed match, beating French teen-ager Thierry Tulasne 7-6, 7-5,7-6. Lendl, a 22-year-old who has won 91 of 94 matches since last September, next faces India's Ramesh Krishnan today. Defending women's champion Hana Mandlikova of Czechoslovakia had lit- tle trouble advancing into the third round with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Betty Stove of the Netherlands. "IT'S JUST a matter of waiting to see if my eyesight will be restored to my Rnormal vision," Leonard said. "I have six months to think about retirement." "Time is a factor. If the doctor ad- vises me against fighting, that's it. If I get the green light, I will have to think about it," he said. Leonard said he would evaluate his life, "what I need and don't need. I will then make the decision. No one can ad- vise me." Leonard's surgery was performed May 9 by Dr. Ronald Michels at the Johns Hopkins Hospital's Wilmer Eye Institute. Dr. Michels examined Leonard again on Wednesday. The operation caused cancellation of Leonard's title defense against Roger Stafford May 14 at Buffalo. 4 4 Seminars now forming for June and October BSAT and GMA T Ann Arbor " Livonia East Lansing e Troy e Toledo Dearborn " Columbus AAnA rber * LivewnNa 1 4
