Orioles down ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)- Sammy Stewart tossed a five-hitter and Eddie Murray hammered four hits and drove in three runs last night as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Texas Tangers 6-0. The triumph was the first career win over the Rangers for Stewart, 5-3, who struck out two and walked two. MURRAY HIT two singles, a double and his sixth homer of the season. He gave Baltimore a 2-0 lead with his first- inning homer with Rich Dauer on first via a single. The Orioles added a run in the third when Murray singled home Ken Singleton, who had doubled, and threatened to make it a big inning. Dan Ford followed Murray's hit with a double and Benny Ayala walked, loading the bases and chasing Rangers starter Frank Tanana, 1-7. But reliever Dave Schmidt got Cal Ripken Jr. to ground into an inning-ending double play. Baltimore scored two more times in the eighth, as Ripken singled home one run and John Lowenstein came home from third on a throwing error by second baseman Mike Richardt. Doubles by Murray and Ford, who had three two base hits, gave the Orioles their final run in the ninth. It was the Orioles' seventh victory in nine games and the Rangers' seventh loss in nine tries. Cogan breaks 200 mph INDIANAPOLIS (AP)- Intermittent raindrops couldn't dampen the speed yesterday as Kevin Cogan and Mario Andretti led another assault on the 200 mph mark in the final practice session prior to Sunday's Indianapolis 500. Cogan, whose Ford-powered Penske PC-10-identical to the one driven by teammate and pole-sitter Rick Mears- will start in the middle of the first row, was clocked on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway electric eye at 202.292 mph on his fast lap around the 2 -mile oval. ANDRETTI, who will start from the second of the 11 rows in the 66th Indy race, piloted his Wildcat-Cosworth to a top lap of 202.247. The fastest recorded lap for Mears was 200.758, but team owner Roger Penske said, "We got both cars at 202 early in the practice. They were run- ning great, so we took 'em back to the garage. There wasn't anything else we needed to do." Not all 33 starters for Sunday's race could say the same. Rookie Chet Fillip, who has yet to drive his first lap in an Indy-car race, failed to make it out during the practice sessin because of a clutch problem. The only other no-show Thursday was two-year Indy veteran Dennis Firestone, whose race engine was being rebuilt. A. J. FOYT, who qualified at more than 203 'mph for a record 25th Indy start, failed to get his March-Cosworth over 170 mph in a brief appearance on the track. the only four-time Indy win- ner gruffly said the car had "some sort of problem" and took it back to the garage for work. A crewman for Foyt, the third man in the front row, indicated, however, that the problem was in the chasis setup and was not serious. Michael Chandler, who putthe fastest of the four stock block Chevrolet engine-powered cars in the race, came off the track spraying oil and the crew immediately took it back to the garage to begin repairs. And Gary Bet- tenhausen didn't even complete his first lap before blowing an engine in his Lightning-Cosworth. Bill Whittington, one of three Florida brothers in the race this year, was back on the track in the car he crashed Sun- day during a practice session. Thje car was extensively rebuilt but recorded a top lap of 193:673 to join 19 other machines over 190 yesterday.
