HO SO~ Suspended California sex prof. gets death threats LONG BEACH, Calif. (UPI) - A suspended professor under in- vestigation for being "romantically in- volved" with students in his Psychology of Sex course says he has been the target of death threats since the furor over his unorthodox clases erupted, it was reported yesterday. "I've pretty much sunk to the basement level," Prof. Barry Singer told the Long Beach Press-Telegram. "I'VE GOT 40 million people out there who are ready to kill me. Some of my colleagues are put out with me, and campus administrators are upset too." Singer, a tenured psychology professor at California State University -Long Beach, was suspended for 30 days with pay after the California State University Board of Trustees discussed his controversial course in a closed session Wednesday. Chancellor Glenn Dumke said he called the president of California State University - Long Beach after the session to advise him that a state code section permitted suspending a teacher whose presence on the job might cause a serious problem. University President Stephen Horn then suspended Singer pending a full review of his cour- se. EARLIER IN the day, the Los Angeles Times reported that Singer had admitted being "romantically in- volved" with at least three of his students - a report the professor said contained "wildly inaccurate facts and some truths." "I have done nothing unethical or un- scrupulous," Singer said, who added it was not unusual for faculty members to date students. "I am quite comfortable with my behavior." Singer, 38, said he was "astonished" by the public outcry since it was disclosed he offered course credit for homosexual and extramarital sexual encounters. He said he has received numerous death threats since stories appeared about the class, which he has taught for eight years. In the Times interview, Singer said he attended parties given by students where nudity and sexual activity oc- curred, but now leaves parties before anybody takes off their clothes.
