Page 14-Thursday, May 27, 1982-The Michigan Daily WASHINGTON (AP)- A poll of nearly half the teams in the National Football League has found nearly unanimous support of a strike authorization proposal, officials of the players' union reported yesterday. sh o w s "There has been no real opposition to the strike authorization, only a couple of abstentions," said National Football League Players Association President Gene Up- TS erP shaw. UPSHAW REFUSED to name the teams polled to date by the union. su p p o rtEarlier it was reported the Kansas City Chiefs voted 52-0 and the Washington Redskins 50-0, with three absentions, authorizing union leaders to call a strike. Two player representatives at Wednesday's news con- N k ~ ference, Sam McCullum of Seattle and Amos Fowler of Detroit, said polls of their respective teams, while not com- tri pleted, showed overwhelming support for a strike authorization. A TWO-THIRDS majority of the union's 1,500 members is needed to give the NFLPA's executive committee the authorization to call a walkout. The polling of all teams is expected to be completed within the next two weeks, Upshaw said. "The reason for polling the members at this time is to give managment a message," said NFLPA Executive Director Ed Garvey. "Everyone will know where we are." JIM MILLER, a spokesman for NFL Management Coun- cil, which represents the owners at the bargaining table, declined comment. "It is not our policy to comment on the internal workings of the NFLPA," Miller said. The players' union contract with the NFL expires on July 15. On Tuesday, negotiators for the union and the owners agreed the changes of reaching a settlement prior to the July 15 deadline are unlikely. DESPITE THE union's claim of near unanimity among its membership, a group of players, including Pittsburgh quar- terback Terry Bradshaw, have said they will cross picket lines.
