Page 14-Tuesday, May 25, 1982-The Michigan Daily Tracksters win Big Ten's By RON POLLACK The Michigan men's track team didn't take a lot of firsts at this weekend's Big Ten Championships, but it took the one which counted the most- that being the top spot in team scoring. In all, Michigan only got first-place finishes from Andrew Bruce in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, Derek Harper in the long jump and the 400-meter relay team of Harper, Earl Allen and Andrew Bruce in the 18-event meet. "WE KNEW we'd have to win on second, third and fourth place points," said Michigan head coach Jack Har- fey. "The Wolverines won the meet with 115 points, narrowly edging second- place Indiana, which scored 109 points. "We knew it was going to be close," said Harvey. "We didn't score as many points as we hoped to on the first day of the meet, so we didn't know if we could win. But the sprints carried us through." And leading the way in the sprints for the Wolverines was Bruce. "I think he's the only person ever, in the Big Ten, to win the 60 and 300 two years in a row, and the 100 and 200 two years in a row and be a member of the winning 4x10 relay two years ina row," said Harvey. ALTHOUGH Harper's winning jump of 24-5 wasn't near his best ever, Har- vey had nothing but praise for it. "It was a clutch performance, because he won with his last jump," said Harvey. But the most impressive Michigan performance probably came from the 400-meter relay team. Not only did the Wolverines win this race. but thevset a record had been 40.6 which also belonged to Michigan (1979). "The key there was Earl Allen, who was on the football team and came out," said Harvey. "The last two weeks. he's been running real well. He sparked the relay. Everyone ran well, though, and we had good baton passes." IN ADDITION to his exploits in the 400-meter relay, Allen came in third place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.78. In the 10,000-meter run, Michigan's Brian Diemer came in second place behind Illinois' Tom Stevens. Diemer finished with a time of 8:44.10, while Stevens broke the tape in 8:37.85. The Wolverines' Mike Shea also took a second. He did so in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:48.19, .52 seconds behind Ohio State's Scott Rider. SHELBY JOHNSON finished third in the 110-meter high hurdles for Michigan, crossing the finish line in 14.35. Wolverine Dave Lugin came very close to defending his conference title in the high jump, but had to settle for second place instead. Lugin and Wisconsin's Dave Greenwood tied at seven feet, but Greenwood took first place on the ensuing jumpoff. Other Michigan point scorers were Johnny Nielsen who finished third in the shot put and Dave Wooley who tied for second in the pole vault competition. Finishing behind Michigan and Ohio State in the team scoring were Wiscon- sin (84 points), Illinois (62), Michigan State (57), Minnesota (54), Ohio State (29), Iowa (25), Purdue (23) and Nor- thwestern (0).
