'M' netter Leach in semis

ATHENS, Ga.- Michigan's Michael Leach qualified for
the NCAA tennis semi-finals yesterday by defeating sixth-
seeded Glen Michibata of Pepperdine 7-5, 6-2, in the quarter-
finals.
Leach earned the right to meet Michibata by defeating
Howard Sands of Harvard earlier in the day in the third
round, 6-2, 6-2.
In the doubles competition, Leach and Mark Mees, the only
other Wolverine netter in the tournament, did not fair well, as
they lost to the team of Sands and Adam Beren, which
represented Harvard. Leach and Mees lost the first two sets,
7-6 and 7-5. In the third set they struggled back and seemed
on the verge of taking it before falling, 10-8.
Leach's singles victory upped his season record to 31-12.
Last season, the Michigan senior finished out the year with a

12:00 noon in the semi-finals competition. The Wolverines
have had only one NCAA singles champion. Barry MacKay
went the distance in 1957, the same year Michigan won the
team championships.
Should Leach defeat Stein, he will meet the winner of the
other semi-final matchup between Brad Gilbert of Pepper-
dine and Marciel Freeman, the tournament's second seed, of
UCLA. The finals are scheduled for tomorrow.
Leach made it into the third round with victories over
Glenn Lyendecker of Yale and Tom Warneke of Trinity. San-
ds entered the tournament touted as Harvard's number one
singles player.
Mees dropped out of singles competition in the first round
of the championship tournament Thursday with a two set
defeat at the hands of Scott Davis of Stanford.

Mactaggert trounced
in NCAA tournament

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Michigan women's tennis head coach Ollie Owen's
words turned out to be prophetic. Prior to the NCAA Championship he said of the
Wolverines' Mary Mactaggert, "If she gets over her nervousness she'll do all
right. If not, she'll bomb out."
Mactaggert played her first-round match yesterday, against Rollins College's
(Florida) Vicki Nelson, and according to Owens she was nervous during a 6-0, 6-0
loss.
Nervousness, however, was not the sole reason for this drubbing which took
place on center court. The fact that Nelson was the tournament's number-one seed
undoubtedly had something to do with the lopsided outcome.
In spite of the final score, Owens did find something positive to say. "At least it
was a good experience, and it will help her down the road," he said.
The loss dropped Mactaggert's record to 12-9. Mactaggert was the only Michigan
player in the tournament.
