Leach advances to third round in tourney special to the Daily with wire service reports ATHENS, Ga. - Although the Michigan men's tennis team did not fare well at the NCAA team championships, the Wolverines top two singles players, Michael Leach and Mark Mees, opened play yesterday in the individual competition. Leach, who lost in three sets in the team competition to Georgia's John Mangan, made ammends by advancing to the third round of the singles competition with wins over Yale's Glenn Lyendecker, 6-4, 6-2 and Trinity's Tom Warneke, 7-6, (7-4), 6-4. Leach will now face Harvard's number one singles player Howard Sands todlay. MEES WAS not as successful as his teammate as he dropped a first round two- set decision to Scott Davis of Stanford, 6-4, 6-1. In the first round of the doubles competition Leach and Mees were scheduled to face Harvard's Sands and Bern, but the match was delayed by rain. In a major upset, seeded Rodney Harman of Southern Methodist University was ousted in the first round by unseeded Danny Saltz of UCLA. BUT SALTZ had little time to enjoy his victory. An hour after his 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 vic- tory over Harmon, he took the court in the second round, where he was defeated by Sands. Thirteen of the top 16 seeded players won their first-round contests in the cham- pionship matches at the University of Georgia. No. 3 seed David Pate of Texas Christian University will face unseeded Jeff Tur- pin of SMU in the third round. PATE KNOCKED off two unseeded players, Craig Neuhart of California-Baker- sfield, 6-4, 3-6, 64. Turpin beat unseeded Ronald Etienne of Florida International, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 and unseeded Allen Miller of Georgia, 6-1, 6-3. Miller earlier had defeated No. 9 seed Jean Desdunes of Clemson 6-2, 6-2. No. 13 seed Pat Serret of Arkansas fell to unseeded Mark Johnson of Arizona State 6-4, 6-1 in the first round. Reflecting on his short-lived elation over defeating top-seeded Harmon, Saltz said, "There are a lot of good players in this tournament. So if you're not playing your best you're going to lose. I guess I was still trying to enjoy my first win." Doily Photo MICHIGAN NUMBER one singles player Michael Leach returns a shot in early season action.
