ATHENS, Ga. - Michigan's two top tennis perfor- mers face their greatest challenges of the season today as Mike Leach and Mark Mees enter the first round of the NCAA individual singles championship here at the Georgia courts in Athens. Leach, 20-8 on the season, and unseeded here, faces Yale's Glenn Layendecker in the opening round. Layendecker, 17-12, seems to have recovered from the elbow trouble that plagued him earlier in the year, he captured the men's collegiate New England championship by defeating Harvard's Howard Sands in the finals. MEES, 18-11 and also unseeded, takes on Scott Davis of Stanford. Davis, seeded fourth and ranked sixth nationally, brings a 30-5 record into the tournament, 20-of those wins coming in dual meets, as well as his title as Pac Ten conference doubles cham- pion. An All-American last year, Davis holds the all- time record by winning 24 United States junior titles. He played in the U.S. Open as a junior and as a collegiate and plans to return to Flushing Meadow this September. Leach and Mees will also play doubles at the tour- nament. They square off against Sands and Beren of Harvard in the first round of the 32-team draw for the doubles. Despite Davis' impressive credentials, he could only garnish the number-four seeding behind Rodney Harmon of;Southern Methodist, Marcel Freeman of UCLA, and Texas Christian's David Pate. Robbie Venter of team-champion UCLA is the fifth seed.
