He walked only one and never allowed more than one runner in any inning in out-dueling Boston's Dennis Eckersley, 4-3, who struck out six, walked two and gave up seven hits. Eckersley's three losses have been by scores of 2-0, 1-0, and 3-0. BANNISTER WAS given all the support he needed from the first two batters of the game. Bobby Brown led off with a single, stole second, went to third when catcher Gary Allenson's throw sailed into center field and scored on Joe Simpson's groundout. Bochte led off the fourth with his second homer of the season and the Mariners got their final run in the ninth on a triple by Todd Cruz and Manny Castillo's sacrifice fly. Tony Perez got Boston's first hit, a single leading off the second inning. But after Carney Lansford fouled out, Dave Stapleton grounded into a double play. Glenn Hoffman opened the Red Sox' third with a walk but was thrown out trying to steal and Dwight Evans was stranded at second after his one-out double in the fourth. Bannister retired 15 batters in a row until Reid Nichols singled with one out in the nin- th. Mets 7, Reds 4 NEW YORK (AP)- Gary Rajsich hit a three-run homer, the first of his major league career in a four- run fifth inning, as the New York Mets defeated the Cincinnati Reds 7-4 last night. Randy Jones, 5-2, was the winner with relief help in the eighth from Neil Allen, who gained his 10th save. Cincinnati starter Bruce Berenyi, 4-2, lasted five in- nings and gave up all the Mets' runs. The right- hander had allowed two runs or less in six of his last seven starts. JONES, 1-8 last season, walked to start the New York fifth, and Mookie Wilson singled. Wally Back- man beat out a bunt to load the bases. Rusty Staub's sacrifice fly scored Jones to give the Mets a 4-1 lead and Rajsich then hit Berenyi's first pitch over the left field wall. Cincinnati had taken a 1-0 lead in the first on Dave Concepcion's RBI single. But the Mets came back with three runs in the fourth, one on a double by Hubie Brooks and two on Ron Hodges' double. Johnny Bench's third homer of the season and 26th of his career against the Mets made the score 7-2 in the seventh. Cedeno singled home two Cincinnati runs in the eighth before Allen came on to cool off the Reds. Indians 6, Blue Jays 5 CLEVELAND (AP) - Toby Harrah slammed a one out home run in the bottom of the ninth inning off Dale Muray last night to give Cleveland a 6-5 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays, snapping the Indians' four-game losing streak. Dan Spillner, 1-3, pitched 2 2-3 innings of relief and earned the victory despite giving up the tying run in the top of the ninth. HARRAH'S SOLO shot, his eighth of the.season, represented the first run against Murry, 2-2, who had pitched 32-3 innings of two-hit scoreless relief. The Blue Jays tied the game in the top of the ninth when Lloyd Moseby tripled and, after Spillner retired Ernie Whitt on a grounder, scored on Garth Iorg's sacrifice fly. That erased a 5-1 lead Cleveland built with the help of Von Hayes' three-run homer in the first inning and six strong innings by Rick Sutcliffe, who allowed four singles and one run in his first start of the season. 4 SPORTS OF THE DAILY: Strack resigns TUCSON, Ariz. (AP)- University of Arizona Athletic Director Dave Strack has submitted his resignation, effective July1. Strack, 58, and the Michigan basket- ball coach during 1960-68, became athletic director 10 years ago. He said in a letter yesterday to outgoing President John P. Schaefer he felt it was "a most appropriate time for me to step aside so that the new president, Dr. Henry Koffler, can select whomever he wishes to lead this most visible depar- tment." HE HAD come under fire as a result of a 1980 scandal involving former head football Coach Tony Mason, who faced criminal charges of filing false claims for travel expenses. During a trial last year at which Mason was acquitted by a Pima County Superior Court jury, testimony revealed a slush fund for use by mem- bers of the athletic department had existed during several years of Strack's regime. Fidrych promoted BOSTON (AP) - Mark "The Bird" Fidrych took another step forward in his comeback effort yesterday when the Boston Red Sox promoted him to their International League team in Pawtucket, R.I. Fidrych, 27, who has been plagued by arm problems after winning the American League Rookie of the Year award with Detroit in 1976, had signed a minor league contract with Boston at the start of spring training. He did not pitch in any exhibition games and has been working out in the Florida Instructional Rookie League. The right-hander pitched seven innings there Saturday and is scheduled to start for the Pawtucket Red Sox Saturday night when they host Toledo.
