til they received word from the hospital
on the cause of death.
Rotman said the Shapiros left Ann
Arbor for home on April 22, before he
could give them the results of his autop-
sy. Rotman said he had no plans to send
his results to the Shapiros, but he added
that the death dertificate, which lists
the cause of death, is available to them
through the county clerk's office.
More than 200 Markley residents at-
tended a candlelight memorial service
for Shapiro on the evening of April 22.
During the service, the resident advisor
on Shapiro's hall described the events
leading up to the death. Rick Schenker,
the RA on the third floor of Elliot House
who stayed close to Shapiro throughout
the ordeal, said that doctors told
Shapiro after the accident that he could
either remain in traction for several
weeks and wear a body cast for two
months or have a leg operation and risk
only a one percent chance of infection
and further damage.
ON THE EVENING before the
surgery, Schenker said Shapiro was
"really psyched up, really positive
about it. He was always a positive per-
son."
On Wednesday morning, about ten
minutes after the surgery was reported
a success, doctors returned to the
waiting parents and said that com-
plications had occurred as Shapiro was
moved off the operating table,
Schenker ?aid. Shapiro lapsed into a
coma and died early the following mor-
ning in the hospital's intensive care
unit.
At the service, Schenker described
Shapiro as a "caring, generous, loving
individual." Others at the service spoke
of Shapiro's "zest for life and en-
thusiasm in doing things."
Shapiro's hall mates collected
donations for the planting of trees in
Israel as a memorial. Several of his hall
mates flew to Massachusetts for the
funeral on April 23.
Kevin Doria, Markley's building
director, said that before last month he
had never heard of any injuries
sustained in falls from dorm lofts, but
within a one-week period, three dorm
residents were hurt in falls. In addition
to Shapiro, one student broke his arm
and another sprained her ankle, Doria
