Sampson
to stay at
Virginia
as senior
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP)-
Two-time All-American Ralph Sam-
pson, spurning a chance at a multi-
million-dollar professional contract and
declaring "it's really what I want to
do," said yesterday he will play
basketball for the University of
Virginia again next season, his senior
year.
First word of the decision by the 7-
foot-4 center, college basketball's
player of the year in 1981 and 1982,
came in a taped interview with Mac
McDonald of the Virginia Network, who
broadcasts the University of Virginia's
games.
"I DID A lot of soul-searching, but I
have decided to stay for my fourth
year," Sampson said. "It got down to
what I really wanted to do. Would I be
happy in going? I wanted to come back
another year."
Sampson said he was not worried
about the money aspects of turning
professional because he felt he would
get what he wanted next year.
In addition, he said he felt very close
to his teammates and would like to win
the NCAA championship, which so far
has eluded him.
There had been earlier indications
that Sampson would declare himself
eligible for the June 30 National
Basketball Association draft only if it
were certain he would be drafted by the
Los Angeles Lakers.
But the Lakers, who reportedly had
offered the San Diego Clippers $6
million for the Clippers' first-round
draft choice so they could be sure to
claim Sampson, apparently were
unable to close the deal.
Red Holzman
quts Knicks
NEW YORK (AP)- Coach Red
Holzman of the New York Knicks has
retired, the National Basketball
Association announced yesterday. A
spokesman for the Knicks said the 61-
year-old Holzman would remain with
the club as a consultant.
No successor was named, though
former Atlanta Hawks Coach Hubie
Brooks reportedly is in line to succeed
him. Holzman's job was in jeopardy af-
ter the Knicks finished in last place in
the Atlantic Division of the Eastern
Conference and the club suffered a
steep decline in attendance during the
recently completed season.
Holzman coached the Knicks for 14
years, though there was a break in his
continuous service as he took over a
front office post when Willis Reed
became coach.
.Holzman had one year remaining on
his coaching contract.-
