Escape summer with a movie

HAT COULD be nicer on a broil-
W ing mid-summer day than to sit in
air-conditioned luxury, clutching a
frosty drink in one hand and candy bar
in the other, watching a film that takes
your mind off of all those petty nuisan-
ces like the Falkland Islands or nuclear
disarmament?
The movie industry is banking on that
desire to reap enormous profits this
summer. Most of the films opening in
the next few weeks will feature action
that is as far removed from reality as
possible. Tron, a Walt Disney produc-
tion, takes place partly inside a com-
puter where electric-and-light beings

want to overthrow the computer
program that controls their lives.
You can't get much further away
from the real world than that.
The science fiction trend also con-
tinues to be a major influence.
Megaforce and Road Warrior both turn
the traditional summer car-chase pic-
ture into a futuristic battle zone and
Blade Runner stars Harrison Ford as a
detective fighting clones in a city cen-
turies in the future.
The Secret of Nimh and The Sword
and the Sorcerer will go after audiences
who want pure fantasy, the first film
being an animated tour of a magical
land and the other a flashy, special-
