In London, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher said the sovereignty issue was "negotiable" but that she would never agree to "sell out" the 1,800 English- speaking innanitants of the Falklands. AS PEACE TALKS entered a critical stage at the United Nations, diplomatic sources in Buenos Aires disclosed that U.S. ambassador-at-large Vernon Walters paid a secret visit to Argentina earlier this week. Diplomats in Buenos Aires said Walters arrived Monday, met with Argentine officials on the Falklands crisis and had already left. They had no detail but one Argentine newspaper, Clarin, quoted government sources as saying the Walters mission was "un- successful." ON THE WAR front, Britain updated its report of an air-and-sea battle Wed- nesday, saying it shot down three U.S.- made Argentine Skyhawk fighter- bombers that attacked and slightly damaged a British warship inside the 200-nile blockade zone around the Falklands. - Argentina admitted the loss of two Skyhawks but said they inflicted "con- siderable damage" on two British frigates. Neither side reported further fighting, however, and a flurry of diplomatic activity turned attention from the fog-bound South Atlantic to Buenos Aires, London and the United Nations, where peace talks entered their sixth day. IN BUENOS AIRES, Galtieri ap- peared to drop his demand for recognition of Argentine sovereignty over the Falklands as a condition for a cease-fire. "Sovereignty is our objective and we are not going to renounce this objec- tive," Galtieri told three British repor- ters who were briefly abducted Wed- nesday. "But we can talk to achieve this objective. "We can talk in a reasonable period of time as long as it is not for another 149 years to achieve this sovereignty," hesaid.
