The Michigan Daily-Friday, May 14, 1982-Page 11 New violence erupts in two Polish cities WARSAW, Poland (AP) - New street violence broke out in Warsaw and Krakow yesterday evening after a day of scattered protests marking five months of martial law. Witnesses - said the worst clashes were in Krakow, where police firing tear gas, water cannons and concussion grenades battled a crowd estimated at 10,000 people who gathered outside a church. THE WITNESSES said the crowd gathered outside the Church of the Virgin Mary in Krakow after a Mass and began chanting "Solidarity! Solidarity!" and yelling for a march. Police charged the crowd with shields and nightsticks and the battle began. A smaller clash involving about 1,000 youths took place in Warsaw's Old City, and police dispersed the crowd with tear gas and clubs. The incidents were smaller and less violent than the rioting of May 3, which lasted for hours. Prior to the evening violence, yester- day's demonstrations were not as widesuread or as serious as the un- derground leadership for the susnended Solidarity trade union had called for, and the government proclaimed itself satisifed that calm had prevailed. IN WARSAW, a crowd of about 5,000 people gathered at the city's central in- tersection at noon and stood for about 20 minutes, chanting "Free Lech Walesa!" and "Solidarity!" When police picked up riot sticks and put on helmets, the crowd quickly dispersed. Observers in the provincial cities of Lodz and Lublin said there were no protests there. Traffic moved smoothly in the capital as pedestrians and drivers ignored calls by the clandestine Radio Solidarity to halt. It was difficult to determine what the response was nationwide to calls by un- derground leaders of Solidarity for 15- minute factory strikes. It appeared unionists and police both acted with restraint as no violence was reported. At the Ursus tractor factory, a stronghold of Solidarity before it was suspended when martial law was or- dered, assembly line work continued but one department staged a stoppage, workers said.
