suicidal mission.

r marine is fighting at the limits of its
capacity, the film gives us strong
f characterization and human reactions
t to the trauma of war.
Still, except for the very end of the
movie, there is not that much that is
different from the traditional American
war movie. We see the brave, yet
scared, multi-talented band of men
gamely struggling to survive in less
than perfect situations and commanded
by people hundreds of miles away from
the battle. Not that new an idea.
It is in the detail of the production and
the efforts to inform audiences about
this particular episode of WWII that
Das Boot succeeds.
So even if the film superficially looks
like some others, it is well worth
looking at it for a glimpse at war from a
slightly different perspective

'Kim Wilde' (EMI America)
Better sit yourself down - I'm going
to try my damnedest to turn "main-
stream" into a compliment in the next
few minutes.
I figure it's the least I could do since
Kim Wilde has obviously worked so
hard to make mainstream a real com-
plement -to her sound. She has
everything good about mainstream rock
and roll rolled onto one piece of vinyl.
And lest you think that's only a few
minutes of material, let me point out
that she manages to find forty full
minutes worth. Even more amazing is
that she's also got some of the best of
non-mainsteam rock crammed in there
and none of what's wrong with the
mainstream.
In short, this record has got an
astounding amount of commercial
power to the square minute, its com-
mercial savvy only compounded by its
aesthetic smarts. The only potential
problem is that it's so perfect, that it
may not get on the radio simply
because it will shame everything else
presently featured there, even the
"best" stuff. It's like The Go-gos
without being so.disposably cute, Joan
Jett without being so trashy, Billy Idol
without being so calculated, Pat
Benatar without being so Pat Benatar.
Wild's sound is a lot like The Cars' in
that she seems too smart for her own
good, but so good that it hardly seems to
matter.
You have been warned; now that rip-
ples from the Wave really seem to be
showing up on the airwaves, we'd bet-
ter place our bets wisely. For my
money, there's no smarter bet than
Kim Wilde.
And, oh yes, the Surprise Ending of
the Month: The grandiosely discordant
pastoral terchnopop of " Tuning In
Tuning On."
