Shackled on two hits through seven innings by Baltimore starter Mike Flanagan and Jim Palmer, the A's scored their four runs in the eighth in- ning on three singles and three walks. TONY PHILLIPS started the inning uprising with his second single of the game. Walks to Rickey Henderson and Dwayne Murphy loaded the bases and chased Palmer. Johnson's single to left off reliever Tim' Stoddard drove in Phillips and Henderson. Tippy Martinez, 0-4, came on- and walked Wayne Gross but got Davey Lopes to hit into a double play, leaving runners on second and third. Meyer then singled through the infield, driving in the tying and winning runs. Dave Beard, 4-0, the fifth Oakland pitcher, earned the victory. Baltimore took a 4-0 lead in the game. The Orioles scored twice in the third inning on run-producing hits by John Lowenstein and Ken Singleton, and ad- ding two more runs in the fourth on Cal Ripken's homer. Ripken lined his third homer of the season into the left field stands after a walk to Joe Nolan. Braves 6, Cubs 3 CHICAGO (AP)- Ken Smith cracked a pinch single scoring Larry Whisenton with the tie-breaking run and Dale Murphy drove in three runs, two of them on a ninth inning homer, lifting the Atlanta Braves to a 6-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs yesterday. Bob Walk, 4-2, picked up the victory for Atlanta with Gene Garber gaining his seventh save. Randy Martz, 3-3, took the loss for the Cubs, ending a four- game Chicago winning streak. MURPHY'S ninth home run of the year cushioned the Braves' lead in the ninth after Smith's pinch hit had snap- ped a 3-3 tie in the sixth. The Braves jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first as leadoff hitter Claudell Washington ripped Martz' second pitch for a single and scored when Glenn Hubbard doubled to left. Hubbard scored on Chris Chambliss' infield grounder. A leadoff single by Ryne Sandberg in SPORTS OF THE DAJ the third touched off a two-run rally for Chicago. Sandberg advanced to second on Martz' sacrifice bunt and scored one out later when Bump Wills looped a single to center. Bill Buckner's double off the right field wall scored Wills. ATLANTA TOOK a 3-2 lead in the fourth with the help of a Chicago error and a pair of walks. With one out, Bob Horner lofted a drive to the left field warning track for a double and Whisen- ton walked. One out later, Sandberg dropped Rafael Ramirez' grounder to third, loading the bases and Walk drew a walk, forcing in the lead run. Chicago's Leon Durham tied the' score in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff home run, his fourth of the season. But an error by Durham opened the door for Atlanta to score the go-ahead run. Whisenton walked to lead off the sixth and Bruce Benedict laid down a sacrifice bunt. Martz fielded the ball but his throw was wide of second base and Durham over ran the errant throw in center field, putting Whisenton on third. Cub reliever Dick Tidrow got the next batter on a popup but Smith's single to center scored Whisenton with the win- ning run. Murphy then completed the scoring with his two-out homer in the ninth. Tigers postponed again ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)- Rain, for the second night in a row, caused postponement of the American League game between the Detroit Tigers and Texas Rangers yesterday. None of these three men are ear- ning degrees. this week by studying hard, taking tests or going to class. college easy way Instead, these men are getting honorary degrees. The one thing Auerbach, Davis and Steinbrenner have in common is an involvement in sports. Auerbach received his honorary degree yesterday at the University of Massachusetts' Boston campus The degree was that of honorary Doctor of Humane Letters. Davis. a member of the Pro Foot- ball Hall of Fame, and Steinbrenner, the controversial owner of the New York Yankees, will receive honorary degrees at Grambling State University's graduation ceremonies Sunday. Davis, who will be the guest speaker at the ceremonies, graduated from Grambling in 1956 after starring for the Tigers' football team. He then played professionally for two years with the Cleveland Browns and 10 years with the Green Bay Packers. Steinbrenner's involvement with Grambling stems from the fact that he sponsors a trip by the school's football team to New York each year for a game in Yankee Stadium. A Rangers spokesman said the two rainouts would force the teams to playa pair of doubleheaders when the Tigers next are in Texas, July 9, 10, and 11, but he said no definite dates had been set. Yankees, Twins trade MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (AP) - The New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins completed a five-player trade yesterday with the Twins sending veteran catcher Butch Wynegar and pitcher Roger Erickson to the Yankees for shortstop Larry Milbourne and two minor league pit- chers. The pitchers, left-hander Pete Filson and right-hander John Pacella, are from the roster of the Yankees' Inter- national League club at Columbus. Wynegar is hitting .209 this year with one home run and eight runs batted in. He will become the Yankees' starting catcher, replacing Rick Cerone who was placed on the 21-day disabled list Wed- nesday with a broken thumb. Erickson is 4-3 with a 4.87 earned run average. THE TRADE increased the furor among the youthful Twins which began Tuesday when the team sent top reliever Doug Corbett and second baseman Rob Wilfong to the California Angels for two minor leaguers. That trade caused reliever Ron Davis to say Twins owner Calvin Griffith should be traded and he added the trade was "stupidity." Of the trade yester- day, Davis said "there ain't no future for this team." Griffith responded to Davis' remarks by calling him a "New York counter- feit." "IF I HAD had time today he would have been in my office," Griffith said. "We will have a conversation after we get back from a road trip." The general sentiment of the team yesterday was that Griffith didn't care about the team or winning anymore, only about saving money. "The ballplayers better start playing some baseball and quit worrying about the front office," Griffith said.
