THE BBC, QUOTING informed sour- -
ces, said Mrs. Thatcher was devastated
by the news. She made no immediate
comment.
But, speaking in the House of Com-
mons earlier yesterday, she had ex-
pressed her fear that "I might have to
come to the House of Commons with the . E/EU
news that one of our own vessels had
been sunk .. . The worry I live with
hourly is that Argentine forces, in at-
tacks both naval and air, will get
through to our own forces." _
Mrs. Thatcher made the statement in
defending herself against critics of the
British sinking of an Argentine cruiser,
the General Belgrano, on Sunday.
A MEMBER OF the House of Lords,
Laborite Lord Jenkins, accused the
government of "mass murder on the
high seas." Most Laborites, while
reflecting alarm at the escalation of the
conflict, argued for stepped up
diplomatic negotiations. -
Mrs. Thatcher responded that the at-
tack was justified by the need to protect
British fortes, even though the ship was
outside Britain's 200-mile war zone.
"If we had left it any later it might U
have been too late, she said.
MRS. THATCHER and Defense
Minister John Nott said the cruiser
carried heavy armaments and posed a
serious threat to the British armada
around the Falklands.
Mrs. Thatcher recalled that Argen-
tine ships and aircraft were given due
warning to stay away from the fleet, in-
side or outside the blockade zone, in an C
April 23 note of Buenos Aires. It said
"any approach ... will encounter the
appropriate response."
Nott said the Belgrano, accompanied
by two destroyers, was "closing in on
elements of the task force which was
only hours away."
"The threat the task force was fo r
such that the task force commander w a
