(AP)- Luis Tiant went down to the minor leagues to prove he still could pitch in the majors. He proved it. HE IS SCHEDULED to start tonight for the Pittsburgh Pirates against the Montreal Expos. "I guess I have to prove myself again," Tiant said after being sold by the Portland Beavers to the Pirates Tuesday. "At least now I have the op- portunity. That's what's important." There was no such opportunity during spring training this year after the veteran of 16 major league seasons was unceremoniously released by the New York Yankees. TIANT IS AT least 40 years old. But in Portland, where Tiant had a 15- 1 record on his way to the majors in 1964, the Beavers signed him to a one- year contract for an estimated $165,000. As part of the deal, Tiant pitched in spring training with the Pirates, but did not make the major league club. THE BEAVERS are Pittsburgh's Class AAA farm club, but Tiant signed with Portland and not with the Pirates. Beavers' General Manager Dave Hersh said the Pirates obtained the veteran pitcher from Portland for less than the waiver price of $25,000, meaning the minor league club ap- parently tooka financial loss. But Hersh said it was worth it because of the publicity Tiant got for the Portland club. I I Tiant . .. comeback complete 0021
