initial pre-season game marked Jolly's
first starting assignment in the
National Football League. Yet, the con-
test will be one that Jolly remembers
not for his debut as a first-team player
in the NFL, but rather for the
disastrous outcome that it had for him.
While covering a punt against the
Cowboys, Jolly injured his knee which
resulted in surgery Monday morning.
"No one ever: -hit him, he just twisted
his knee and tore ligaments," lamented
the Packers' Public Relations Assistant
Bryan Harlan.
JOLLY BECAME the Green Bay
starting free safety when the Packers'
starting strong safety, Steve Luke, was
traded to the. Atlanta Falcons. Johnnie
Gray was then moved from his free
safety position, where he had been a
starter, to the spot left vacant by Luke.
All of this movement in the Green Bay
secondary left an opening at the free
safety position, and Jolly capitalized on
the opportunity.
"He'd looked real good in practice,"
said Harlan. "He has a good knack for
the ball."
The Packers must now find a
replacement for Jolly, and Harlan is
not overly optimistic about the prospec-
ts vying for the starting position. "It's
not a good situation. (The secondary)
wasn't a strong part of the defense to
start with, and now losing Mike makes
it tough. We have a few journeymen

The injury-riddled career of Michigan State quarterback Bert Vaughn has come
to an end. The senior from Mogadore, Ohio suffered a knee injury this spring
during team workouts which required surgery.
Vaughn was the Spartans starting quarterback in 1979 and the beginning of the
1980 season, and would have earned his fifth letter in football if he had played this
season (he lettered in 1977 despite being redshirted in a season in which he com-
pleted his lone pass attempt).
THE 1979 SEASON saw Vaughn complete 57 of his attempted 128 passes for 729
yards and four touchdowns. Vaughn's playing time was reduced during the season
when a first-quarter sack during the fourth game of the year against Notre Dame
resulted in a bruised kidney. Asa result, Vaughn could not throw without pain, and
his only other appearance of the season was in the Spartans' seventh contest of the
year, against Purdue.
Vaughn recovered from this injury and regained his starting spot in time for the
season opener against Illinois last year. He played well against the Illini, com-
pleting 16 of 32 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns.
But the following week against Oregon, Vaughn was again beset by an injury.
This time it was a rib injury, and Vaughn "never completely healed," according to
Michigan State Assistant Sports Information Director Mike Pearson.
Following the rib injury, Vaughn did not see any more action last season. When
he hurt his knee in spring practice this year, Vaughn was the Spartans' third string
quarterback behind junior John Leister and senior Bryan Clark (the son of Detroit
Lions' head coach Monte Clark).
The career statistics for the 6-4, 218-pounder were: 97 passes completed out of an
attempted 204 (47.5%) for 1,331 yards and eight touchdowns.
