Rose re lects on
NL hit record
PHILADELPHIA (AP)- Pete Rose said he stood on first base and had goose
bumps.
"I never felt anything like it," said Rose, who had just collected hit No. 3,631 to
erase Stan Musial's National League all-time career record of 3,630.
"I'VE RECEIVED standing ovations in my life," Rose said Monday night, "but
nothing like this."
The crowd of 60,561, obviously attracted by the 40-year-old Rose's bid for a piece
of baseball history, applauded, cheered and screamed as if it were New Year's
Eve in Times Square.
Rose's night was capped by a call from President Reagan who congratulated the
Philadelphia Phillies' first baseman and complimented him for bringing baseball
back in style.
Reagan, of course, was talking about opening night for baseball's second season
after a 50-day players' strike and more than a week of preparing for the resum-
ption of play.

Won NL batting titles in 1968 (.335), 1969 (.348), 1973 (338).
Set modern NL record, hitting safely in 44 consecutive games (1978).
