Page 10-Friday, August 7, 1981--The Michigan Daily 4 'Self help' for the cartoon businessman 4 (Continued from Page 9) to "the executive spouse": "Instead of having your husband buy you a little ring for Christmas, a necklace for Valentine's Day, and possibly pearl earrings on your birthday, ask him to give you a token gift on two of the oc- casions and a very nice piece of jewelry on the third." This is how to live for success? IN THE HANDS of John T. Molloy, the "self-help" book reaches a new low. He obviously follows the format of the "self-help" book by offering various charts and diagrams. But his illustrations are exceptionally crude, especially those in which he attempts analysis. After about 100 pages of such stuff, it becomes clear that Molloy is not ex- plaining how to live for success, but how to ape the manners of America's upper-middle class. And it further becomes clear that he is writing to two audiences: those who experience ex- treme anxiety about preserving the up- per-middle class world in which they were nurtured, and those who are on the verge of becoming the first mem- bers in their extended families to own (if only jointly), say, a Mercedes. In Live for Success, Molloy does nothing more than excite the insecurities of these people with incorrect and im- moral characterizations of the American business world. Undoubtedly, Molloy's book is already a financial success, especially in the mail-order bookclubs. It is discouraging to estimate how many gullible status seekers are already taking Molloy's serious advice seriously. 4 a THE MOVIES AT BRIARWOOD 1-94 & S.
