Arts The Michigan Daily Wednesday, July 29, 1981 Page9 NoOI t SThe Go-go's Squeeze Squeeze-'East Side Story' (A&M)-This may well be the perfect soundtrack for summer-one great pop tune after another, each capsulizing some small moment of life. East Side Story, produced by Elvis Costello and Roger Bechirian, is made of 14 gems, each one polished a little differently, after peak of pop perfection. SIDE ONE starts with "In Quin- tessence," the only Dave Edmunds- produced track. It's a beautiful song about someone in the dumps about love, but Chris Difford and Glenn Tillbrook seem a little too forceful here; they're not relating much to the sorrow of their own lyrics. - "Someone Else's Heart" is more representative of Squeeze's sparkle. The lyrics describe reading old love let- ters received by your lover. It seemed quirky at first, to be singing about this topic, but now the refrain "Same words, different meaning, Same heart, different feeling. -.- Now I know about that someone else's heart." brings a certain struck chord of satisfaction. On "Tempted" the British boys go rhythm and blues. With Motown keyboards included, Paul Carrack provides all the right touches to evoke strong emotion. As an added treat, Elvis Costello supplies a Temptations- like bass line. Well, since I've so em- barrassingly lost my critical reserve over the first three tracks, it should not be hard to imagine that the following ten are equally as good. East Side Story is state-of-the-art pop. With this on the turntable and a chance to see Squeeze perform live tonight at Nitro's in Detroit, you have no excuse to have a dull summer. -Regina Myer The Go-go's-'Beauty and the Beat' (I.R.S.)-Geez, The Go-go's really wanna be cute. Do they think you gotta be dumb to be cute? I don't think so. I think it's just that their musical im- maturity is showing. The Go-go's rely on simple poppy rock and roll . . . but it's a bit too sim- ple for their own good. Most of the songs on this debut album are no more than holding patterns for the one simple hook that appears in the chorus. Most of the hooks themselves are flippant, forgettable twists. The only one really worth waiting around for is the chorus to their signature song "We Got the Beat." The only song which shows enough sophistication to have more than a momentary hook (i.e., it ac- tually has a memorable melody throughout) is "Fading Fast." THE REAL PROBLEM is that, with a few precious exceptions, The Go-go's never really let go on this album. They sort of remind me of the dancers on American Bandstand; they shake it, but not enough to endanger their hair- dos. The Go-go's, likewise, are playing t it safe, not trying for too much. Perhaps being raucous would expose their limited abilities too much. About all you can say is that they dd what little they attempt fairly well. At least The Go-go's have built a reputation as a good live band, which shouldn't come as such a surprise.'This kind of simple, hook-laden rock and roll can grab your feet live even if it doesn't grab your ears over speaker wire. We'll see whether they really -deserve that reputation this coming Monday when they appear at Second Chance. -Mark Dighton each one achieving a character all its own. The success of East Side Story is truly no surprise. Squeeze's previous releases have all been well-crafted and catchy. I can remember being unable to stop humming songs like "Cool for Cats," "Up the Junction," and "If I Didn't Love You." Yet East Side Story surpasses Squeeze's earlier work in that the entire album works.
