(AP)-Ailing Craig Virgin overcame Alberto Salazar to win the featured 5,000-meter race yesterday, while renegade Brian Oldfield took the shot put in the windup of the National Sports Festival track and field program. Virgin, from Lebanon, Ill., crossed the finish line in 13 minutes 35.4 seconds, about two yards ahead of Salazar, who was timed in 13:38.2. IN THE SHOT put, Oldfield, a 6-foot-5, 275-pounder, won with a throw of 68 feet, 5 inches. It came on his second attempt. He fouled on his last four tries. The closest race of the day was in the women's 1,500, as Cindy Bremser, for- merly of the University of Wisconsin, nipped Jan Merrill at thetape iri 4:15.62. Bremser was the leader through three laps before Merrill forged to the front at the start of thefinal lap. Bremser challenged twice down the back straightaway. Merrill warded her off, but she could not hold off Bremser in the closing strides. IN ANOTHER CLOSE finish, the West's 400-meter relay team of Ron Brown, Eric Brown, Festival 100-meter champion James Sanford, and Festival 200-meter champion Dwayne Evans, edged the South team in 39.28 seconds. The South, with Mike Roberson, All-American football player Walker, Willie Gault and Harvey Glance, were clocked in 39.34. The West also won the women's 400 as Alice Brown, Jeannette Bolden, Florence Griffith and Jackie Washington outran the East in 44.14. Veteran John Powell got off a throw of 214-1 on his final attempt and won the men's discus, beating Art Burns, who had a best of 210-0. Pam Spencer, the American record holder in the women's high jump won her specialty at 6-3%.
