OAKLAND, California (AP) -
One way or another, Reggie Jackson
excites Oakland baseball fans.
He did it in the A's 3-2 win over the
league-leading Tigers by throwing
out the tying run at the plate in the
seventh inning.
JACKSON, WHO struck out two
times at bat to run his season total to
93, figures he's the kind of player
who has to be either a hero or a goat.
"I can throw the ball as hard and
as far as anyone in baseball,"
Jackson said. "But sometimes, it
might go 80 rows into the stands."
Jackson's defensive gem, which
nailed Dick McAuliffe, saved the
game for Jim "Catfish" Hunter, who
went the route to pick up his seventh
victory against eight losses.
Detroit's Joe Sparma, 7-9, absorbed

wins amateur tourney
BAD AXE (UPI) - Elaine Crosby, with pinpoint short iron shots, played her
way to the title in the Women's Michigan Annual Amateur Golf Championship -
defeating seven-time winner Patti Boice by four strokes with three holes to play.
The tournament was played at the Verona Hills Golf Club near Bad Axe.
"SHE JUST OUT played me," Miss Boice said. "My drive wasn't strong and
my putting was very poor. I could not make any crucial putts and was never really
confident."
"But Elaine played beautifully and is a very deserving champion," Miss Boice
added.
Miss Crosby, 23, graduated in December from the University of Michigan,
where she played golf for the last four years.
"I PLAYED A lot of tennis before, but decided I like golf better," Miss Crosby
said. "This has got to be one of the happiest days in my life. My short irons and put-
ting improved all week."
"Patti is a nice lady and I respect her a lot, she's pleasant to play with and
right in the thick of things every year," Miss Crosby said.
Miss Crosby moved five holes ahead with a par on the 10th hole. Miss Boice
won the 11th and 12th to cut the margin to three. They tied the 13th. Miss Crosby
birdied the 14th and parred the 15th to claim the championship.
Miss Crosby said she plans on playing in the Jackson City Tournament next
week. She won that tournament in 1979 and was runnerup in 1980.
