The Michigan Daily-Friday, July 17, 1981-Page 'I Student Savings Shield Benefits Everyone STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND STAFF save hundreds of dol- lars on products and services they need. Such promo- tions are enjoying increasing popu- larity as consumers become more bargain conscious. Locally, there is the Michigan Money Saver, the Ad Sheet, Semca, and others. Even Ma Bell may soon enter the arena. Discount promotions generally come in one of two forms-dis- count cards or coupon booklets. In designing S$S both forms were in- corporated, thus merchants are able to discount all year, just once, or anything in between. With the program structured, MSA was able to suggest a means of conducting a survey to gauge the interest of student organiza- tions. They were very helpful, and student groups responded very positively. Next, selected merchants were approached and they also liked the program. However, many were hesitant because they mistakenly thought that Student Savings Shield (S$S) was the Student Savings Card (S$C). This prompted us to conduct a thorough investigation into S$C and what we found was a real can of worms. A first class fraud had been perpetroted. A smooth talking salesman representing an outfit from Texas told MSA one story and merchants another. Then he ran off with the money. We wanted to assure both stu- dent organizations and merchants that S$S was not a fly by night operation. We went to S.O.A.P. and MAW for suggestions. Out of our discus- sion with them, a university ac- count was opened in the name of Student Savings Shield / Northwood Non-Food Co-op. S.O.A.P. univer- sity accounts require full documen- tation of all transactions. This was an important step for S$S. S$S Staff have had to contact many university offices in the course of "pulling it together" and all have been very obliging. Thank you S.OA.P., MAW, MSA, N.C. Family Housing, Michigan Union, Campus Information Center, UAC, Major Events ... NEXT WEEK Samplings of what organizations pion to do with their proceeds rom S$S. S$S is an adhesive decal that you place on the back of any i.d. card. Bearers of S$S buy from the same stores-those listed in the S$S "Savings Pages" directory. Listed merchants offer S$S bearers val- uable discounts! You will be able to save hundreds of dollars with a $3.00 donation to the student, faculty, or staff organization of your choice. STATUS REPORT Below is the index of the S$S Saving Pages Directory.
