Oakland homers burn Tigers, 5-3

I

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP)-Tony Ar-
mas led a four-homer Oakland attack
with his ninth of the season, breaking a
3-3 tie in the seventh inning, as the A's
defeated the Detroit Tigers 5-3 yester-
day.
The first three A's homers were off
Detroit starter Dan Petry, 0-2. They
trailed 3-1 after three innings, but Cliff
Johnson homered in the fifth and pinch-
hitter Mitchell Page tied the score with
a leadoff homer in the sixth.
JEFF NEWMAN followed Armas
with another homer in the seventh.
Oakland improved its record to 22-6

with some excellent relief pitching
from Bob Owchinko, Jeff Jones, Craig
Minetto and Paul McLaughlin, who
held the Tigers to one hit over 6 2-3 in-
nings.
Owchinko pitched four scoreless in-
nings and Jones, 2-0, got the victory
with two innings of work before giving
way to Minetto after walking Alan
Trammell with one out in the ninth.
Minetto retired Steve Kemp on a line
drive to right, then surrendered a single
to right by Richie Hebner, with Tram-
mel going to third. Paul McLaughlin

to a full count on Lance Parrish before
Parrish fouled out to third baseman
Wayne Gross to end the game.
Matt Keough, Oakland's starter, was
battered for eight hits in 2 1-3 innings.
Kirk Gibson opened the game by hitting
his third homer of the season, and
Detroit scored two runs in the third on
RBI singles by Rick Leach and Tom
Brookens.
Braves 4, Cards 3
ST. LOUIS (AP)- Reliever Bruce
Sutter walked Brian Asselstine on a full
count with the bases loaded in the
eighth inning, scoring Jerry Royster as
the Atlanta Braves beat the St. Louis
Cardinals 4-3 yesterday.
Sutter issued the walk after St. Louis
starter Silvio Martinez, 0-2, yielded a
one-out single to Bob Horner and
walked Dale Murphy. After pinch-run-
ner Royster and Murphy executed a
double-steal, Sutter intentionally
walked Glenn Hubbard and struck out
Bruce Benedict before walking pinch-
hitter Asselstine.
Right-hander Rick Camp, 3-1, picked
up the victory after allowing one
unearned run in the final three innings.
Astros 6, Cubs 0
CHICAGO (AP)-Jose Cruz hit a pair
of running-scoring sacrifice flies and
Terry Puhl scored three runs to back
the six-hit pitching of Bob Knepper and
lead the Houston Astros to a 6-0 victory
over the Chicago Cubs yesterday.
The triumph was the ninth in the last
11 games for the surging Astros, who
knocked out starter Randy Martz, 1-1,
with four runs in the first two innings.
Dodgers 2, Phillies 1
PHILADELPHIA (AP)-Steve Gar-
vey's RBI's single in the eighth inning

gave the Los Angeles Dodgers a 2-1 vic-
tory over the Philadelphia Phillies and
handed right-hander Marty Bystrom
his first major league defeat after
seven victories.
Bystrom was brought up last Sep-
tember and won five games in the
Phillies' drive to the National League
East championship and started last
night's game with a 2-0 record.
Jerry Reuss, last year's NL
comeback player of the year, pitched a
six-hitter for his third victory this
season in four decisions. He struck out
four and walked none.
Expos 2, Padres 1
MONTREAL (AP)-Ellis Valentine
delivered the tie-breaking run with a
two-out double in the eighth, leading the
Montreal Expos over the San Diego
Padres 2-1 last night behind Scott San-
derson's four-hitter.
Rodney Scott began the Expos' eighth
with a one-out walk off starter Chris
Welsh, 1-2. Scott then stole second and
advanced to third on a fly ball. He
coasted home as Valentine drilled a pit-
ch to left field.
Jays-6, Indians 2
TORONTO (AP)-Otto Velez ignited
a four-run rally in the fourth inning with
his third homer of the year apd Rick
Bosetti drove in two runs to pace the
Toronto Blue Jays to a 6-2 victory over
the Cleveland Indians last night.
Velez, who hit seven home runs
against Cleveland pitching last year,
collected Toronto's first hit of the game
when he led off the fourth inning with an
opposite-field home run just inside the
right-field foul pole off Rick Waits, 3-1.
Jorge Bell followed with a broken-bat
single and, after John Mayberry
walked, Bosetti singled to score Bell.
