Pistons' pick bides time in Jersey
By SARAH SHERBER
Daily sports writer
NEPTUNE, New Jersey-With just 15 seconds left in the game, it appeared to be
all over for the Royal Manor basketball team. The Headliners had possessioin of
the ball and a two-point lead. Then a wild pass by a Headliner's guard gae the ball
back to the Royal Manor.
With the clock running down, the Manor's star, Kelly Tripucka, scored on a
layup to send Wednesday night's game into overtime, during the Royal Manor's
double-overtime victory,
IT MIGHT NOT be California (where the majority of NBA hopefuls are playing
this summer), but to Tripucka the Jersey Shore League will suffice as he warms
up for the pros ... at least until he signs a contract.
"I'm not going to change my game," noted the Detroit Piston first-round draft
choice. "I'll keep in shape here. This is a stepping stone."
Just where the former Notre Dame forward is stepping to is uncertain. Accor-
ding to Tripucka, there is still alarge gap between his demands and the Piston's of-
fer.
THERE IS ALSO the chance that the former All-American will not play for
betroit at all.
"I think I'm the only person who's been to every team in the league without
signing a contract," said Tripuck, responding to the numerous rumors that have
him going to various teams around the NBA.y a
The most recent trade rumor that Tripucka noted would send him to the New
York Knicks in exchange for Marvin Webster.
TRIPUCKA STATED that he is leaving the task of negotiating his contract en-
tirely to his agent, Bob Wolf. Still the New Jersey native decided not to play in the
California League, and not go to Detroit's rookie mini-camp last month.
"They've got to understand that I'm not going to play without a contract," said
Tripucka;who claims that if he played poorly it could hurt his future negotiations.
If and when Tripucka does sign with the Pistons, he'll be faced with a new ex-
perience. As the former Fighting Irish athlete expressed it, he's never played on a
"loser" before, "not even in grammar school."
AND, AS HE added, Detroit had the second-worst record in the league, winning
only 21 games.
Though he admits that the Pistons were not his first choice, Tripucka vowed that
he would "give 110 percent" for whomever he signed with.
"The way things look now," added the 12th draft choice of the first round in the
May college draft, "it won't be until September (that he signs his contract)."
UNTIL THEN, HE will continue to play at the Jersey coast, where the basketball w
court is in a fenced area behind a bar and the scoreboard only allows for two-digit #
numbers.
Even in 90-degree heat, Tripucka appeared to be giving the aforementioned 110
percent for the Royal Manor team. While the league only allows nine-minute quar-
ters, Tripucka still managed to score over 30 points in this outing, to lead all
scorers.
Yet, for all his talent, the majority of the fans seemed to be against him. There APPhto

The favority joke passing through the crowd was that "you can't even go on University during this past season's NCAA basketball championships. The
vacation until you sign a contract." : Notre Dame graduate was the Detroit Piston's second pick in the first round
But whether the fans liked Tripucka or not, they turned out in force to see him. It of the college draft - Isiah Thomas was the Piston's first selection in the
