The Michigan Daily-Saturday, July 11, 1981-Page 5 FSCA MEMBERS DENY SPY ALLEGATIONS Student group speaks out (Continued from Page 1) with 50 other in an upcoming editorial letter to the Daily. THE. TWO MEMBERS said they received several allegations of being a secret agent by American students and even a University professor. One said his wife couldn't sleep last night because of the suspicion aroused by the allegations reported in the newspapers. The Free China Student Association "never initiates any political activities," said one member. "They (the anonymous accusers) are liars." He said they should list their names. 'How can other people be so cruel and take advan- tage of the situation (of Chen's controversial death)?" one member asked, adding, "It's very im- moral. They should be busy in graduate studies." "I PLAYED PING-PONG with him (Chen). We do feel sorry with his death, but his death has ,nothing to do with this Association." The student, of Chinese descent but-born in Taiwan, said the FCSA receives its funds only from donations at hi-weekly movie showings4 and from MSA's budget-not from Taiwan's government. He said, "It's not worth it to have a government agent here" at Ann Arbor, and added that the of- ficials at the organization have to change every six months. "If- there are secret agents, how can they change every six months?" he asked. ASKED IF THEY believed Chen's death was politically motivated, one of the FCSA members replied: "We believe our government won't do this (kill Chen)." Earlier, one member had replied "we love our government," andsaid that it was wrongly depicted as authoritarian. The two Taiwanese students vehemently disagreed with Carnegie-Mellon University President Richard Cyert's remarks. Cyert said he believed the death of Chen was politically motivated and inferred the Taiwanese government was responsible. He also said "there is a suspicion that a large number of Taiwanese stbdents (in the United States) are on the, payroll" of the government. ONE FCSA SPOKESMAN said, "As a college president, how can he say that? He's supposed to represent moral principles. How can he jump to a conclusion like that?" He added that Cyert's com- ments "are too strongridiculous. He (Cyert) should lose his presidency." Meanwhile, three of the eight students (represen- ting the other faction) who allege the presence of secret government agents in the FCSA met yesterday afternoon with President Harold Shapiro. A spokesman for the three students, a native Taiwanese islander, said Shapiro "was quite helpful" and added they discussed some possible actions that both the University of Michigan and other univer- sities could take regarding Chen's death and the allegations of secret agents on campus. Shapiro declined to make an official public statement right after the meeting, but added he hoped to discuss the issue with other involved univer- sity presidents last night. Another cancer hurdle con querod{ (Continued from Page 3)- physiology and in vivo biochemistry," Wieland said. THE CHEMIST maintained that less noted is the compound's value in diagnosing many heart ailments-in- cluding hypertension-but while results pertaining to this application are only preliminary, they look extremely promising., "This compound is Structurally close to a commercial hypertensive drug-Ismelin-a drug that is still in use to control hypertension," Wieland said, adding that by "imaging" the heart, the compound can tell physicians how the cardiac sympathetic nerves are functioning. "The compound mimics noradrenalin and 80 percent of the radioactivity is concentrated in the cardiac-nerves," Wieland said. "It's chief cardiac value appears to be in diagnosing congestive heart failure." DR. WILLIAM Beierwaltes, head of the nuclear medicine division of the University Department of Internal Medicine, said that the compound may even have a further application-the treatment of malignant tumors in the 10 percent of patients who can't be cured through surgery. "We are currently evaluating the compound in therapeutic doses (instead of the much lower "tracer" doses used in diagnosis) and we have already given it to one patient for treatment," Beierwaltes said, adding that while preliminary results may be en- couraging, it's still "too early-to tell." By the use of multiple radioactive tracer scans in which different agents image major organs such as the heart, liver, lungs, or kidneys, University nuclear medicine specialists have been able to provide surgeons with the location of pheochromocytormas withir - about a quarter of an inch. Kenneth W. hilfer-Minister 6f5-6158 'WHY DO THE HEATHEN RAGE?' Psalm 2:1 and Acts 4:25 One correspondent writes: "It was just such militancy, narrow- mindedness, and bigotry as yours that turned me from Christianity to agnosticism." He signs his name, and present degree, "ex-Reverend." In this instance It appears we accomplished the opposite of what desired and hoped! "Es-Reverend" gave us quite a bit of his time, attention, and consideration. He wrote us an. epistle longer than some in The Bible! There were several things in it for which we were able to compliment him. He is very gifted at sarcasm. We could also sincerely congratulate "ex-Reverend" for giving himself that degree. If a man does not believe we admire him for "getting out." If every minister who took a solemn vow to proclaim and defend the Bible as the Infallible Revelation of God Almighty would get out in case their belief changes, or if they were hypocrits from the outset, then the Church would be cleansed from "something dead up the creek," as well as "dead wood and excess baggage." The Church would be mach better off, and the individuals would greatly improve their own character and integrity, provided they are concerned about such virtues and maintaining a good conscience. We quote from the close of our letter and appeal to ex-Reverend: "Fall on yodr knees, look up to your Creator, The Almighty. Oult looking at 'militant, narrow-minded bigots!' Call on God to reveal Himself to you. Promise If He makes Himself known and real to you, you will 'Fear God, and keep His Commandments, the whole duty of man.' Do that, and follow it up by reading His Book, The Bible, Searching The Scriptures, endure in this good work, and in due season you will reap, if you faint not. You will reap the true knowledge of God, and Jesus Christ whom He hath sent, which is Eternal Life! Then we predict you will rejoice to give yourself the degree of "re-Reverend!" God grant that it will come about! True Christians, pray forthis-man, and all other such "speckled birds!" - Jeremiah 12:9. They can be saved: "For with God nothing shall be impossible." But for His mercy and grace we would be in as bad a fix as they are! t0 405 DECATUR, GEORGIA 30031
