Weight loss merchant Katz buys
NBA's 76ers for $12 million

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Julius
ving & Co., deserted by fans a
failing for three years to win a ch
pionship, were sold yesterday to
weight loss merchant who admitte
was "a little bananas" to spend
million for the Philadelphia 76ers.
Harold Katz, who made million
the last decade taking fat off people
nationwide chain of diet centers,
that his life's ambition was to ow
National Basketball Association to
and that he has been in the market
two years.
"MANY PEOPLE have called m
little bit crazy," the 44-year-old I
told reporters at a press conference
guess you have to be a little banana
buy a sports franchise.

Er- "Since I can't play for the Sixers, and
fter can't coach them, the next best thing
am- was to buy them. My youngest son
o a plays high school basketball, and he
d he was the driving force for me to buy the
$12 club. He said money isn't everything.
"I am in this to enjoy myself, but I do
s in not intend to lose millions of dollars."
in a KATZ'S FIRST official act, even
said while lawyers prepared the necessary
n a papers for the transfer, was to make it
eam clear that Billy Cunningham would stay
for on as coach.
Cunningham, towering over his new

Katz he learned that Fitz Eugene Dixon, a

1968-Year of the Tiger
It doesn't matter if you side with the players or the owners in the
current baseball strike, there is one thing everyone agrees on-it is an
unfortunate situation. So in order to partially relieve the misery of any
baseball junkies going through withdrawal, throughout the duration
of the strike the Daily will provide a look back to a more pleasant time
--1968. There was no free agent compensation, no NLRB, no court
injunctions-and no strike. And for those of you who don't remem-
ber, in 1968 the Tigers were winners, World Series winners in fact.
Each day the Daily relates the results of the previous evening's Tiger
game-minus 13 years. Last night, however, most of the Tigers were
relaxing, as the best of both leagues got together for the 39th All-Star
classic.

sition," Cunningham said. "We met
casually and just talked about
everything. I see no problems."
KATZ AGREED: "I am going to
depend heavily on Billy, and also on Pat
Williams (the general manager). I am
not going to run this team myself. I
definitely understand the game, and I
will be involved.
"My main business is Nutri-System
Weight Loss Centers, and I intend to
stay in that business to be able to afford
this franchise. My background is in
marketing and promotion, and I think
we can increase attendance."
Katz said he wouldn't put pressure on
Cunningham and promise that the
76ers, led by their star forward, "Dr. J"
Erving, will win the NBA championship
this year.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) -
Alabama football coach Bear Bryant
says he's embarrassed by all the hoopla
andcwants legislation allowing him to
coach past retirement age dropped.
THE BILL'S sponsors said it was
aimed specifically at Bryant, who is 68
and lacks only nine victories to surpass
Amos Alonzo Stagg's all-time career
coaching record of 314 triumphs.
Bryant, in his first public comment
on the matter yesterday, said, "It has
become increasingly embarrassing to
me to be the center of a controversy in-
volving the waiver of the state
retirement law."
Busch supported
ST. LOUIS (AP) - A Teamsters
council representing workers in 17
unions voiced support yesterday for the
takeover of Busch Stadium by
Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc., owner of the
St. Louis Cardinals.
Anheuser-Busch tendered an offer in
April to buy the stadium and adjoining
properties. Since then, higher offers
have been received unofficially from
David H. Murdock, a California finan-
cier, and the Clayton-based Apex Oil
Co.
Anheuser-Busch, a prime force in the
raising of funds to construct the
stadium in the early 1960s, has set Mon-
day as the expiration date for its $40.3
million dollar offer.
Under terms of the offer, those
holding securities in the quasi-public
Civic Center Redevelopment Corp., the
stadium's owner, will have two more
weeks to act if another bid is formally;
extended. Anheuser-Busch has also
reserved the right to withdraw or
modify its offer.
Daniel mum
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Glenn R.
Daniel cited the possibility of self-

incrimination 20 times yesterday in
refusing to answer questions about a
slush fund he was alleged to have
operated for use by the University of
Arizona's coaches.
Earlier yesterday, former Arizona
head football Coach Tony Mason had
testified that he had learned of the cash
fund shortly after he became head
coach in late 1976 and had used it twice
- but then had the fund eliminated as
being illegal under National Collegiate
Athletic Association rules.
AND A DEFENSE investigator,
Joseph Hartnett, testified that Daniel
told him in a Wednesday interview that
the university's head basketball'coach,
Fred Snowden, also received money
from it.
Mason, on the stand for a fourth day
in his trial on charges of fraud, theft
and conspiracy in connection with
alleged misuse of university athletic
funds, testified that Daniel operated the
fund.
Mason told Pima County Superior
Court that he used the fund "when I
came back off the road for the first time
and I was broke" and had asked
Athletic Director Dave Strack what to
do.
IT WAS THEN, he said, that he was
told of the cash fund from which
coaches could draw without having to
account for the money. He said he was
told that his predecessors - head
Coach Jim Young and Young's
assistant, Larry Smith - had used it.
But when he learned more about the
fund, Mason said he told Strack: "This
is illegal. I will not be a party to it. I will
not sign my name for cash.
"I ordered it stopped," Mason added.
MASON SAID he didn't know the
source of the money making up the fund
but that it "wasn't kept by the univer-
sity" and was handled by Daniel.
Daniel then was called to the stand
and refused five times to answer
questions, saying he did so under his
constitutional right to avoid possible
self-incrimination.
After a recess for discussion and the
court's decision that it wouldn't order
Daniel to testify, Daniel returned to the
stand and continued his refusal to an-
swer.
Stockton ahead
MILWAUKEE (AP)-Dave Stockton,
one of pro golf's 30 millionaires mired
in a slump, shot a 7-under-par 65 and
took the early first-round lead yester-
day in the $250,000 Greater Milwaukee
Open.
The 39-year-old Californian, a two-
time winner in this event, required only
26 putts on the huge, soft greens at
Tuckaway Country Club.

HOUSTON (AP) - Willie Mays'
unearned run, scored while a double
play was being completed, was the only
run baseball's elite could muster, as the
39th All-Star Game ended in a 1-0 vic-
tory for the National League.
It was the first time in the history of
the All-Star Game that no player had a
run-batted-in, and also the first time
that the contest ended with a score of 1-
0. Both teams produced only eight hits
in nine innings, another first.
The American Leaguers managed
three doubles, sending 30 men to the
plate. At one point, 20 American League
batters were retired in succession.
The National League's performance
was not much better. They notched four
singles and a double and drew six
walks. But they also hit into two double
plays.
The game's only run came after
Mays singled off of a Luis Tiant pitch.
Tiant then tried to keep Mays on first,
but overthrew the American League's
first baseman, Harmon Killebrew, for
an error and Mays advanced to second.
Tiant then threw a wild pitch on a ball
four to send Curt Flood to first and
Mays to third.
Willie McCovey followed with a boun-
cer to Rod Carew for an easy double
play while Mays crossed the plate.
