Local bars cited for sales to minors (Continuedtfrom Page 3) waiter/waitress is arrested for serving intoxicants to minors. HE EMPHASIZED that this detail is "not of high priority." He explained that the police force is obligated to en- force the law, but they only audit stores when there is availale personnel or an excess of complaints. "No effort is made to dupe or trick" the proprietors, the sergeant added. But the manager of one local beer store said, "That's exactly what they did." He also questioned the legality of having minors in fact purchase alcoholic beverages without being arrested. The manager added, however, that he does not deny the illegality of selling liquor to the minors. Second Chance Manager John Carver said his workers were being "very careful" the evening when the arrest took place at that bar, but that police were using people who looked fairly old. HE ALSO complained that the bar- tender who was arrested was never confronted with the person he sup- posedly served, or had a chance to see him later. The penalty for serving intoxicants to a minor is 90 days in jail and/or $100, according to the sergeant. Carver said, however, that a Second Chance barten- der who was arrested previously had to pay $150 and do 72 hours of public ser- vice. The owner of The Blind Pig, Dave Whitmore, said he doesn't expect the incident to be repeated at his bar. One reason for this, he said, is that he is considering not allowing persons under the legal drinking age of 21 into his bar at all. HOUSTON ANYONE? Would you like to relocate to HOUSTON, TEXAS?
