With the present state of the Michigan economy merchants nor students have extra money to contribute to stu- dent organizations and their charitable causes. This dilemma has forced reduc- tions in programs for many organizations and threatens the very existence of others. Such was the plight of a small North Campus co-op this past academic year. As they struggled to get a few adver- tisers to cover the printing cost of their price list the words "sorry, it's not in our budget" came up repeatedly. Yet merchants were buying discount coupon advertising from commercial ad agencies which ironically were targeted at students. As ex- plained by the co-op's co- ordinator "The implications were clear, merchants em- pathized with student organizations but they simply couldn't afford charity cases. If we hoped to obtain their support we would have to be competitive with commercial agencies." Research began and it was almost im- mediately apparent that collectively student organizations had the capacity to develop an excep- tional' discount adver- tisement. The co-op laid the ground work, then contacted other student organizations who became excited about the potential of the program. At that point it was decided to include faculty and staff groups as well. When one merchant was asked what he thought oaf the S$S program he replied. "It's a great idea and will be successful . -.. it enables both merchants. and students (also faculty and staff) to give because they also receive." NEXT WEEK "How it all pulled together." Hard work by co-op members, plus the heip and co- operation of S.O.A.P., MSA, Michigan Advertising Works, the Michigan Union, the North Cam- pus Famiiy Housing Office, and others were instrumental to the deveiopment of StS.
