INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - For a
decade, Sparky Anderson has watched
the game he loves as a manager. With
major league players on strike, he says
he's seeing the game from a different
point of view.
"I never realized until the strike that
I was a baseball fan," said Anderson,
manager of the Detroit Tigers. "When I
leave the park in Detroit, I'll always
turn on a baseball game and listen to it
during the 40-minute drive home.
WITHOUT A major league baseball
game to attend because of the players'
strike over free agent compensation,
the former Cincinnati Reds manager
said he's learning the game's impor-
tance to other baseball fans.
"Now I see where the fan really plans
his day around the game," Anderson
said. "To me, it kind of takes him

through the week.
"When you're in your own little world
and traveling, you don't think about the
other people. There are so many people
being touched by this, people who are
out of work." Anderson said he's not
unaffected by the strike.
"I'VE HAD headaches because of it,"
Anderson said. "Shoot, I never had
headaches. Upset stomachs, sure, but
not headaches.
"I took 10 aspirin in three days.' I
never do that."
Perhaps the headaches will disap-
pear when the strike is settled. But An-
derson said he believes the strike will
leave an indelible impression.
"I hope when the strike is settled, all
will be forgotten," he said. "But I don't
think this will ever be forgotten in spor-
ts history by everybody."

Ovett wins
MILAN, Italy (AP) - Steve Ovett of
Britain won the 1,500-meter race of the
Milan track meet yesterday in three
minutes, 31.95 seconds, a half-second
off his own world record.
Running in a slight drizzle, Ovett had
a strong start and was doing better than
his world-record time after 800 meters.
Teammate Tom Binns led the pace
through the 800 meters in 1:52.68 before
dropping out.
OVETT HAD clocked 1:53.08 in
Coblenz last year on the way to his
3:31.42 world mark.
When Binns stopped, John Walker of
New Zealand took the lead but the pace
slumped between the 800 and 1,200
meters, when Ovett started his winning
kick and came around the final bend to
hit the finish line alone.
Ironically, Ovett's time in Milan
matched the time clocked in Stockholm
Tuesday night by his archrival and
fellow Briton, Sebastian Coe, who was
also making a try at the world record.
