6 youths
murdered
by death
squads in
Salvador

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (UPI)
- A rightist death squad kidnapped and
assassinated six San Salvador youths
during an overnight curfew strictly en-
forced by soldiers with shoot to kill or-.
ders, authorities said yesterday.
Witnesses and relatives of the victims
said heavily armed gunmen in civilian.
clothes kidnapped the six youths from
their homes in the northern working'
class suburb of Apola and shot them to.
death on the outskirts of the city.
THE KILLERS were identified as,
members of a death squad because only
rightist extremists and security forces
can circulate freely during an over-

night curfew harshly enforced by
soldiers who have killed some 850
violators since the curfew was imposed
Jan. 14.
Judicial authorities reported another
five political slayings around the
nation, where an estimated 22,000
people have been killed since January
1980 by the death squads, 'government
troops and leftist guerrillas fighting to
topple the ruling junta.
The death squads are allegedly made
up mostly of off-duty and retired
policemen as well as national guar-
dsmen. They have been blamed for
some 80 percent of all politicalaslayings.
