The MichigonDoily-Saturday5Jyne 20 1981-Page 1 Regents vote to discontinue geog raphy (Continued from Page 1) procedure should be invalidated because the administration may have ignored a Regental guideline. According to the AAUP, the bylaws leave such questions as program discontinuance ,with the faculty - not with the administration. The LSA faculty voted in April against discon- tinuing the geography department. Regent Thomas Roach (D-Saline) said, "I think the (discontinuance) procedure was adequate and fair ... the (regental) guidelines were intended for the faculty to play an ad- visory role." ROACH SAID, "If we followed their (AAUP) road we could never discon- tinue anything." "It is a clear loss of the capacity to govern," Nystuen said. "If the ex- pression of faculty views over matters of curriculum are only advisory, then that is a serious loss of the collegiate atmosphere. "The University is attacking its own body in a way that is most disgusting," Nystuen added. REGENT SARAH Power (D-Ann Ar- bor) said, "I have found the financial argument for geography discontinuance to be the least persuasive." "I am very struck that as you look through the catalogue, that in fact geography is one of the most broadly based and profoundly interdisciplinary subjects," Power said. Knott explained to the Regents that "We would expect to give (geography) students every chance we can.-... we will bend over backwards to help them through the program." KNOTT TOLD the Regents that most of the work in relocation of faculty and the continuing education of geography students would be handled by LSA Dean-designate Peter Steiner. The Regents' vote to discontinue en- ded a long and fairly controversial review process. The question of cutting an academic unit to balance an expec- ted University budget deficit was hotly disputed by both students and faculty members in several open meetings and hearings. One argument was that students' opinions and objections were excluded from the meetings where the most im- portant recommendations were made. Others Worried that the department's elimination will create a dangerous precedent to future University actions taken to balance the budget. GEOGRAPHY graduate student Margaret Wilder said, "I think the im- pact and ramifications of the decision were not discussed long and hard enough. It was a short-term solution to a long-term problem. "Students who intend to complete their education will face a very steep climb," Wilder added. Administrators have stated that the geography department has declined in quality while rising in costs for the past decade. Knott said that the status of the, geography department was considered in previous reviews, one in 1975 and another in 1977. "We have looked at a number of other programs and other departments," Knott said. "This one was the only one that presented the combination of reasons (for discontinuance).
