preparing for his new role in the
National Basketball Association, Isiah
Thomas,, the Detroit Pistons' first-

doesn't want to leave his college

"I CAN GROW academically and as a
professional basketball player. It's a
great opportunity. I can't let it slip
through my hands," said the 6-foot-1,
185-pound guard.
"Right now, I'm concentrating on
school," added Thomas, who is
studying this summer at Indiana's>x
DePaul University.
"I didn't leave the academic part of
college, I left college basketball. The
main thing is education; I'll still be
enrolled in the off-season," he said.
THOMAS, WHO had completed only
his sophomore year at Indiana when he
decided to turn pro, said he is unsure of
how he will fit into the Pistons' plans
this fall.
However, Thomas said he will do
"whatever the coach tells me to do. I
want to be what Detroit wants me to be.
I have to adjust."
THE PISTONS also announced
yesterday that they had signed 7-foot-i
free agent center Richard Johnson to a
multiyear contract.
Johnson, who graduated from
Detroit's MacKenzie High School, at-
