Page 18-Thursday, May 7, 1981-The Michigan Daily MORSE PERFORMANCE LEADS TEAM Linksters take 2nd at invitational I By JAMES THOMPSON After placing fifth in the Kepler Invitational, the men's golf team went on to place second in the Michigan Invitational, and seventh in both the Mid- American and Northern Collegiate Invitationals. At the Michigan Invitational held at the University Course, the linksters placed second behind Indiana with the swing of John Morse, Steve Maddalena and Ed Humenik. "I feel the most consistent man has been Morse, who mixes with others to form the great nucleus wehave," said coach Tom Simons. Michigan was followed by Minnesota and Eastern Michigan, who had the 36-hole winner. Morse finished third in this event, tied with Gary Stickl from Indiana but swept first in the 18 holes. THEN ON APRIL 27 in Kalamazoo, at the Mid- American Conference Invitational, Michigan's top players were Maddalena, Morse, Humenik and Jim Becker. The individual champion there was Min- nesota's Tom Lehman, and Michigan's too finisher was Maddalena who took third. After these two performances coach Simons felt that the only problem the team has is everyone just doesn't seem to get it all together at the same time. He also noted the team isn't consistent. "We always lose the first round and come back to win the second and third." Coming off these second- and seventh-place finishes, the team went to West Lafayette to place seventh once again, in the Northern Collegiate In- vitational, with contestants from 15 other schools. Morse again led the Wolverines, with Maddalena close behind. The overall winner was Ohio State. Minnesota, who had beaten the Wolverines earlier in the season, finished behind them this time in 11th place. Purdue, Indiana, Michigan State, Iowa and Ball State also finished-in front of Michigan. SO FAR THIS SEASON, THE Michigan linksters have been led by the swing of Morse, with Mad- delena, Humenik, Pursell, and Becker following respectively. "We're on our way to make a three-tournament swing, and all we have to do is have everyone at their best during the same time," said Simons. The team will travel to East Lansing for the Spar- tan Invitational this weekend and then travels on to Madison for the Badger Invitational. Last year the men finished 11th in the Spartan Invitational and took a respectable third in the Wisconsin tournament. The season comes to an end when they tee off at the Big Tens to be held in Minneapolis on May 15-17.
