The 6-1, 180-lb. netminder from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, has a chance to start in the wake of departing goalies Paul Fricker, Rudy Varvari and Bob Sutton. The Wolverines will need all the help they can get in the nets, as the only retur- ning netminder with college experience is senior Peter Mason, owner of a career 1-5 slate. GIORDANO ALSO SIGNED Mark Chiamp, another goaltender, who played for the Redford Royals of the Detroit Junior "A" League. The 5-8, 160-pounder will also vie for a starting position. Two defensemen were also inked, including 6-3, 195 John Hawkins from Buffalo, New York and Mike Neff, a 6-1, 190-lb. blue-liner from Birmingham Brother Rice High School. Neff played for the Paddock Pool Saints in the Detroit Junior "A" League. Both Hawkins and Neff are solid defensive defen- semen who may get playing time. Rounding out Michigan's 1981 recruiting class are four forwards. Jeff Grade, a 5-111%2, 175-pound center-forward, was a member of the 1980-81 National Junior Team and is a good skater who can compete with the most physical of players in the corners. THE OTHER forwards who will attend Michigan are 6-0, 175-lb. Paul Kobylarz from Catholic Central High School and 5-9 170-lb. James Huber, who was a Junior "A" All-Star in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Craig Noren, a 5-11, 165-lb. center from Lakeland High School completes the list. "Grade, Huber and Kobylarz are all proven scorers," Giordano said. "They will be competing for-positions and are expected to contribute." The forwards will be counted on to help fill the gaps left by three departed linesmen, Roger Bourne, Jeff Mars, and Gor- die Hampson, all of whom finished in the top seven in scoring this past season for Michigan. All told, Giordano expects about twenty players to report to camp in the fall, approximately 12 walk-ons in addition to the eight signees. And many of the positions next season are up in the air. Consequently, with all the newcomers, there is a possibility that some players who have experience may get pushed out of a job, according to Giordano. - MAJOR LEAGUE ROUNDUP Tigers roar past Brewers, 4-1 4 By BARB BARKER Special tothe Daily DETROIT-Dan Schatzeder raised his record to 3-3 with a 9-hit performan- ce that fell just two outs short of a com- plete game as the Detroit Tigers downed the Milwaukee Brewers 4-1 last night at Tiger Stadium. Schatzeder went 81/ innings and gave up only one run which came in the ninth inning, as the Tigers worked their way back up to the .500 mark at 25-25. WITH ONE out in the ninth, Gorman Thomas doubled to deep center field and Don Money followed with an RBI single. Tiger manager Sparky Ander- son quickly pulled Schatzeder and in- serted Kevin Saucier. Saucier struck out Mark Brouhard and got Ed Romero on a bounce out to Stan Papi who finished the game at third. The Tigers scored their first run in the second inning when Richie Hebner led off with a single, Champ Summers singled him to third, and Kirk Gibson followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Hebner. Bill Fahey proceeded to rap a single to right field, but Summers was caught trying to score from second. Mick Kelleher struck out to end the inning. Then in the third, the Tigers added two runs. Lou Whitaker tripled to lead off the inning, and Lynn Jones pumped a sacrifice fly to center to make the score 2-0. Steve Kemp followed with a walk and Hebner banged a double off of the 370 sign in right-center to bring Kemp home and knock starter Jim Slaton off the mound. Jerry Augustine came on for the Brewers and got Sum- mers to bounce weakly to the mound, ending the Tigers' threat. THE TIGERS completed their scoring when, with one out in the eighth, Kemp hit a full count pitch from Augustine into the right field lower deck for the Tigers fourth run. Other than that, Augustine was un- touchable, as he pitched 51/3 innings, giving up four hits, including the home run while striking out four Tigers. Slaton and Augustine paired up to end Gibsons and Jones' nine-game hitting streaks, which were the longest of the season for Tiger batters. Gibson went zero for two with a sacrifice fly, while Jones was silenced in three at bats, collecting a sacrifice fly as well. Indians 4, Red Sox 1 CLEVELAND (AP) - Toby Harrah knocked in three runs with two homers and scored three runs to lead the Cleveland Indians to a 4-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox last night. Cleveland left-hander Rick Waits, 5-4, allowed nine hits, struck out two and walked one in 81/ innings before Sid Monge relieved and picked up his second save. The only Boston run came in the eighth when Reid Nichols tripled and scored on a groundout by Dwight Evans. Cleveland took a 2-0 lead against loser John Tudor, 2-2, on Harrah's third homer of the year, which followed a leadoff single by Bo Diaz in the second inning. The Indians added a run in the fourth when Harrah walked, moved to second on Dave Roselle's fly to right center and scored on Tom Veryzer's single, which glanced off the glove of shortstop Glenn Hoffman. Harrah capped Cleveland's scoring with a solo blast leading off the sixth in- Cardinals, Expos tied After nine innings last night, the St. Louis Cardinals and Montreal Expos were tied at one apiece.
