WANTS LEONARD'S TITLE:
Hearns goes to Washington
WASHINGTON (AP)-Thomas
Hearns, who wants to wear the welter-
weight crown of Sugar Ray Leonard,
came to Leonard's backyard yester-
day, meeting with congressmen and the
media on Capitol Hill.
Hearns, undefeated in 31 bouts in-
cluding 29 knockouts, is the World
Boxing Association's welterweight
champion. Leonard holds the World
Boxing Council's title. The two are
scheduled to meet Sept. 16 at a site still
to be determined.
"IF I WERE a betting man," said
Hearns' trainer, Emanuel Steward, "I
would put my money on the fight taking
place in Las-Vegas." Steward also said
he would put his money on him fighter.
"I'd bet on Hearns and I'd bet a lot,"
Steward said.
The bout may be the richest non-
heavyweight fight in history. Leonard
will reportedly receive $8 million and
Hearns $5 million with both to split a
portion of any revenues in excess of $21
million.
BEFORE LEONARD and Hearns
fight each other, they have other
business to attend to.
Both fighters will step into the ring in
Houston June 25, Leonard to challenge
WBA junior middleweight champ Ayub
Kalule and Hearns to defend his title
against'unranked ,welterweight Pablo
Baez.
Tip O'Neill, speaker of the House,
came down to the luncheon, shook han-
ds with the man they call the Detroit
Assassin and said the best fighter he
ever saw was Sugar Ray's namesake,
Sugar Ray Robinson.
