The Michigan Daily-Tuesday, June 2, 1981-Page 15" Award-winning tracksters close out regular season ,. , F Bruce, Harvey lauded as men win By JOE CHAPELLE The Wolverine tracksters continued their winning ways last weekend in East Lansing as they captured the Cen- tral Collegiate Championship for the fourth straight year. Michigan literally ran away with the title, garnering 1391/3 points to second place Michigan State's 88 and third place Wisconsin's 73 5/6. *And at the end of the meet, Blue sprinter Andrew Bruce was named the Central Collegiate Championship's Outstanding Performer, while Michigan's skipper, Jack Barvey, was named CCC Coach of the Year. JOHN NEILSON started the contest off on the right foot for the Wolverines Friday by taking first in the shotput with his heave of 59'5". Philip Wells, P.another Michigan' shot-putter, took third in the event with his toss of 55' 51/". Saturday, James Ross kept the momentum going for the Wolverines by placing first in the long jump with a leap of 24'3 /", while Dave Lugin clsimed first in the high jump'clearing' 6'103/". Both Ross and Lugin also took firsts in the Big Ten Championships held in East Lansing two weeks ago. BRUCE, WHO set a ,Big Ten record with his time of 10.25 in the 100 meters at East Lansing two weeks ago, took first place in the event once again with his time of 10.83. Darold Gholston finished second in a time of 10.99. In the 200 meters, Bruce claimed another first place for the Wolverines with a time of 21.13. Michigan locked up the top four places in the 5,000-meter run. Gerard Donakowski led the pack of Wolverines as he crossed the finish line at the 14:20.08 mark. Dave Lewis, came in next with a time of 14:21.78 while Bill O'Reilly captured third just two secon- ds off Lewis' pace. Bill Weidenbach rounded out the pack claiming fourth with a time of 14:32.49. In the 800 meters, Mike Shea took another first for Michigan meters in a time of 1.51.02. Scott Erikson placed second in the discus with a toss of 16851/". Two weeks ago, Eriksson finished first in the discus at the Big Ten Championships also held at East Lansing. There was one dark spot for the Wolverines, however. Although the 400- meter relay team of Ross, Derek Har- per, Gholston, and Bruce took first, it failed to qualify to compete in the NCAA championships with its time of 41.31. Coach Harvey said earlier last week that he would like to qualify the team. "She did great considering the con- ditions she had to compete under," commented coach Ken "Red" Sim- mons. Heavy rain storms, replete with thunder and lightning, plagued much of the meet, and caused the surface of the throwing circle used for the discus to be very slippery. FOUR OTHER Michigan athletes competed in this meet: Debbie Williams (javelin), Lori Thornton (long jump), Melanie Weaver (3,000 meters), and Sue Frederick (800 meters).c Williams had a solid performance, getting off a throw of 1588", but it was only good for eighth in this talent- packed meet. Frederick had a similarly frustrating experience, as she ran a good 2:10 in the trial heats of the 800, and a superlative 2:07.86 in the semi-finals, only to miss qualifying for the final by a mere .01 seconds. Frederick's time was a per- sgial best by almost a second; it would have placed her fourth in the final, won by LeAnn Warren of Oregon in 2:06.07. THORNTON AND Weaver did not fare well in their events, as Thornton fouled on all three of her attempts in the long jump, and Weaver faded out of the top ten in the finals of the 3,000; both had had long, tiring seasons. This meet marked the end of the out- door season for Michigan, the most successful season the women tracksters have enjoyed since the team's inception four years ago.
