WORKSHOP HELPS RESEARCHERS SECURE GRANTS: Funding problems discussed By PAM FICKINGER Over 25 University and local resear- chers were drawn to a two-day workshop this week hoping to improve their chances of securing research grants despite looming federal cut- backs in research appropriations. "Are you ready to take a little bit of money and make it go a long, long way?" asked Craig Smith, the speaker hosted by Extension Services for their "Funding for Research" workshop. SMITH IS the founder and director of Grantspeople, Inc., a non-profit public interest training firm geared toward helping researchers improve their proposal development skills when ap- plying for grants. In light of Reagan's "devastating" cuts in social science research, Smith said funding from corporation-which has increased six-fold in 15 years-is one source researchers should definitely turn to. When writing a proposal to such a corporation, Smith said researchers must adjust their styles accordingly, keeping in mind the interests of the corporation rather than the federal government. RESEARCHERS attending the workshop said one of their biggest problems has been finding the time for the extensive paperwork involved in ob- taining grants. They "have a real in- terest in doing research rather than, getting funding," Smith said, adding that they want to spend all their time doing "what they really love"-resear- ch. Workshop participants were given workbooks explaining how to write an effective proposal. In it, Smith outlined a five-step process for turning a resear- Photo by DAVID GAL CRAIG SMITH speaks at a two-day seminar dealing with appropriation of grants for scientific research. cher's first inspiration into grant workshops have been community- tors" create workable relationships money received and efficiently spent. oriented, commented workshop coor- with "grantees."
