The Michigan Daily-Wednesday, May 6, 1981-Page 27 LOOK TO CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP 'M' netters smash Big Ten oes By BARB BARKER With recent Big Ten victories over Indiana (8-1), Ohio State (6-3), and Iowa (7-2), the Michigan men's tennis team rolled over Northwestern last Saturday to finish their third con- secutive undefeated Big Ten season at 9-0 and in first place. "It was a good week for us," said Michigan head coach Brian Eisner. "Matt Horwitch did a super job, beating Paul Wie of Northwestern, and Michael Leach had another super week of singles play." THE NETTERS proceeded to trounce Western Michigan, 8-1, on Monday to wind up their dual meet season with an overall 17-4 record. Junior Michael Leach, with a 7-5, 7-6 second singles victory over Paul Walker, pushed his individual mark to an undefeated 21-0 this season. "Mike has certainly done well this season," said Eisner. "He will be All- America for sure." IN OTHER SINGLES matches, at number one, Matt Horwitch downed Bronco Steve Winsor, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2; Mark Mees rolled over Scott Spoerl, 6-2, 6-1, at third singles; at fourth, Ross Laser smashed Dave Sommerville, 6-3, 6-2; Tom Haney defeated Jeff Stassen, 6-3, 6-3, at number five; and Ihor Debryn captured the sixth singles match, defeating Mark Swanson, 6-2, 6-3. The awesome first doubles com- bination of Leach and Horwitch chalked up their 15th season victory, breezing by Spoerl and Winsor, 6-3, 6-2. At second doubles, Wolverines Haney and Debryn lost a close, split-set match to Walker and Kasson, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. The third doubles team of Mees and Dan McLaughlin topped Sommerville and Stassen, 6-1, 6-1. The Wolverine netters are currently preparing to host the Big Ten Tour- nament, which will be held at the var- sity courts outside of the Track and Tennis Building this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Michigan will attempt to capture the 26th conference crown in its history, 14 of them ina row. Leach ... undefeated at 21-0 Women lose second on eastern trip, 8-1 By SARAH SHERBER Special to the Daily PRINCETON, N.J.-The Michigan women's tennis team suffered the second defeat of its east coast road trip yesterday, as the Wolverines fell to Princeton, 8-1. Michigan's only individual 'victory came when Maryanne Hodges defeated Emily Prayer, 6-2, 6-2, in the sixth singles match. MICHIGAN'S FIRST and second singles players, Mary Mactaggart and Jill Hertzman, epitomized the netters' frustration, as they battled their respective opponents evenly, only to fall short in the third set. In the numbere one singles match, Mactaggart lost the first set, 7-5, to the Tigers' Joy Cummings, but took total control in the second set, breaking Cummings' serve twice to win it, 6-2. However, Mactaggart was unable to capitalize on her aggressive play and lost the final set, 6-4. In an equally thrilling match, second singles player Jill Hertzman managed to take her first set, 7-5, before Prin- ceton's Pia Tanyo came back to win the second, 6-1. Tanyo proceeded to capture the third set, 7-6, when Hertzman double-faulted with the score tied at 6-6 in the tiebreaker. DESPITE THE fact that Michigan had lost the match before the doubles competition had even started, coach Oliver Owens was still "pleasantly sur- prised" with his squad's play. "Our number one girl (Marian Kremer) is hurt, so everyone had to move up one spot," Owens explained. "We were playing without our best player, the girl who wins most in her position. Princeton is also one of the best teams in the East," Owens ex- plained. Amity LSAT GMAT 11f REVIEW PROGRAMS Call for Amity's free brochure on the exam of interest to you. Earlier on the trip, the women netters were eliminated from the Penn State Invitational courtesy of the host Nit- tany Lions by an overwhelming 9-0 score. Then, before facing Princeton, Michigan downed Maryland, 6-3. BEFORE MOVING eastward, Michigan had upended Big Ten rival Purdue, 7-2, on April 17. The joy ended the next day, however, as powerful In- diana handed the Wolverines a close 5-4 setback in Bloomington. The Big Ten Championships were next for the Wolverines, and Michigan started out on the right foot, beating the Boilermakers again, 7-2. But two con- secutive losses by identical 6-3 scores to eventual champion Indiana and Wisconsin left the Wolverines with a fourth-place finish in the conference. Michigan concludes its trip today with a match against Rutgers. Action Sports Wear FACTORY CLOSEOUT Swi mwea r, Footwear, .
